Dear students,

Hope you have been enjoying your winter vacation!

Description automatically generatedThrough my numerous engagements with students, increasingly heard, mentioned, and discussed with many of you are terms like Work-Life Balance, Work-Life Integration or even Work-Life Harmony. So, which one is most ideal, or rather, more importantly, which one is it for you?

What’s certain is this – Everyone’s perceived notion of Work-Life Balance is different. It might mean highly flexible work arrangements for some, or the ability to WFH (of varying degrees) for others. But ultimately, we would agree that what each of us seek, revolve around “striking a balance” between personal and professional lives, by our own individual definition and preference.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, some of you may have been through it during your internship or heard about it from others around you. Practices all around us have indeed evolved. Most of us would have gotten a taste of Work-Life Integration (think of work/classes from home during circuit breaker). Now, we are witnessing the shift towards harmonising between work and life with flexible work arrangement, staggered working hours etc. being widely implemented in workplaces.

But what exactly constitutes Work-Life Harmony?

According to Ministry of Manpower (MOM):

·        Ability to effectively manage work responsibilities and family/personal aspiration

·        Recognition that employee’s priorities vary at different stage of his/her life

·        Read Full report here

According to Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (TAFEP):

·        "Work-life harmony" refers to a state where an individual is able to achieve both professional and personal goals

·        "Work" and Life" are interdependent elements that are increasingly intertwined, given the changing demographics and increased pressures from work and family responsibilities

·        Read more details here

This further reiterates that while there is no direct and straightforward answer to what defines Work-Life Harmony, we can take small steps to complement work and life. Here are a few tips:

1.      Stop searching for balance – Realise that Work-Life balance is elusive. How do we technically “disconnect” when we are living in such a well-connected world? So, finding harmony in everything you do help to take some pressure off your attempts of perfecting balance. (Unless you aspire to be Thanos looking for the elusive and perhaps eventually having to endure a “costly” balance.)

2.      Plan your week around your priorities or “themes” – Plan your work around your priorities or goals rather than a simple to-do list. This helps organise your week in a way that integrates both your life goal(s) and work, therefore allowing both to co-exist!

3.      Get rest – How well-rested you are directly links to your productivity and ability to think both quickly and creatively. Even if you can’t always get a full night’s rest, make sure your mind is well-rested
e.g., meditation for even just a few minutes a day can do wonders for your health, brain, productivity.

Work-Life Harmony forms part of the talent management strategy adopted by employers. Instead of framing and chasing after Work-Life Balance as part of your career objective, you should first seek to understand the strategy employed in organisations.
