Envision the future of aviation and reshape the air travel experience By Sia Kheng Yok, Chief Executive, Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore)

Dear Students,

I hope you have been enjoying your term break so far. For some of you, it may have meant a spot of #revengetravel.

Description automatically generatedBuzz has returned to Changi and airports all around the world as the aviation and aerospace industries forge on the path to recovery. After a long winter for the industry, we are now seeing the first rays ushering in a new era of aviation.

There is, indeed, a lot going on to reinvent the air travel experience in the next decades, and I invite you to consider being part of this transformation. You can participate in many ways – in planning, finance, communications, talent management, customer service, technology development, manufacturing, or operations.

Airspace management. The shortest distance between two points may be “as the bird flies”. However, there are many factors that determine the flight path of a commercial aircraft to optimise safety, aircraft performance and fuel consumption. New modes of transport (e.g., air taxis, drones, space tourism) are also challenging how lower and upper airspace are managed. It is time for a new global airspace operational concept that facilitates the use of high levels of automation to increase airspace capacity and safely integrate emerging forms of air transport across all strata of airspace.

New aircraft concepts. Major aircraft manufacturers and start-ups alike are busy working to introduce new aircraft concepts. These either use alternative fuels or electric power, or seek to invent new modes of intercity and intracity air travel. The changes will be introduced to the mass market over many years, but we are already seeing flying prototypes and urban air mobility vehicles undergoing safety certification.

Air travel experience. Growing health, safety and security considerations are complicating the air travel experience. Many of us have, at some point, experienced PCR tests, body scans, close examination of shoes, removal of belts etc, before we are allowed to fly. Fortunately, better policies, automation and technology have the potential to make the entire journey seamless and more pleasant. At Changi Airport, we are already seeing new concepts being tested and readied for deployment.

While the development of new technologies underpins the above transformations, there is really nothing that can replace people where it matters most. Cold technology only goes so far. Dreamers, planners, decision makers, communicators, and people on the front line who contribute to the warmth of human contact are vital to the air travel experience.
