Dear Students, There is growing interest and
demand among jobseekers to pursue careers in tech, especially since there are
many ads in Singapore citing that this line of profession offer a huge
salary. Ironically, you might have also read news indicating the tech
talent crunch
– highlighting that many tech roles are unfilled, even with ongoing training
programmes available. How then do you get ahead of your
competition AND transform your dream into reality by securing a job in this
industry? The answer? PORTFOLIO. You
need to build a portfolio of personal projects! Here’s
an analogy – to join the tech industry is similar to joining the medical and
healthcare sector. Completing a degree programme would prepare one with the
knowledge of medicine, the various surgical tools, procedures etc. Yet, when
patients are in need of medical attention, they
would be more focused on how effective the medical practitioner is – whether
the doctor can treat and cure them – and not just how knowledgeable the
doctor is. In short, can the doctor deliver the best health outcomes for the
patients? Likewise in the tech industry,
your potential employer is keener on whether you can put together a solution through
data to solve business challenges if you were to be hired. To help present
your knowledge and achievements to prospective employers, my recommendation
is to start a project portfolio after or during your degree programme,
regardless of it being through a self-learn process or a structured
curriculum. So, how can you get started? 1) Find a
business problem and relevant dataset to showcase 2) Post your
codes on GitHub 3) Share your
thought process on GitHub or blog site In addition to a portfolio, I
would strongly recommend that you find a mentor in the field to learn and
seek assistance from. Respect your mentor’s time by always being prepared for
the scheduled sessions. Further, did you know that NTU Career &
Attachment Office has also created a dedicated ICT
Interest Group
offering latest events, resources, and career opportunities for all NTU
students? You may click here to join and stay updated! Finally, if
you are looking to pursue a career in the Data Science and Artificial
Intelligence field and have asked this question, “Am I up for a job Data
Science or Artificial Intelligence?” Check out our Chartered
AI Engineer Handbook
to find out more about being a Chartered AI Engineer! Mr Koo Ping Shung is a trainer,
mentor, and consultant in the field of Data Science and Artificial
Intelligence. He had co-founded and is running tech communities here in
Singapore. |
