Highlights of the
week: For more career opportunities
from various industries, please access Career Axis. Dear students, How are you spending your time during this break? I am guessing some of you would take this opportunity to spend
quality time with your loved ones, explore job opportunities, or catch up on
your favourite activities. And speaking of activities – perhaps you have
already done some travelling during this break or are in
the midst of planning one. With the easing of borders, travelling is
finally something we can experience and look forward to once again! As we are now easing towards restoring pre-Covid-19 normalcy...
Have you ever thought that this pandemic would have such an impact on air
travel and people’s livelihood? With the reopening of travel protocols in April this year,
Changi Airport Group (CAG) has since reported its passenger traffic growth.
For the first week of June 2022, passenger traffic has reached 48% of
pre-pandemic level and consequently, airlines have requested to launch more
flights. CAG has also announced plans to reopen both Terminal 2 and
Terminal 4 to support this travel demand. So, what does this mean for the aviation sector? Earlier in April this year, Mr David Stewart, Partner at Oliver
Wyman, presented his analysis of the outlook on
Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), and projected the industry
to recover to pre-pandemic state by 2023. With the resumption of flying
activities, he noted that there will be more demand for MRO services while
some of the older fleets will be in the timeframe for renewal, thereby
propelling a surge in activities within the sector. Apart from that, Mr
Stewart also shared on the trends and implications on MRO, providing good
insights on the opportunities within Singapore and future trends of the
industry. The aviation sector is a tightly knitted community where the whole
value chain within this ecosystem must come together to emerge from this
pandemic and prepare for the future. This value chain comprises Designer,
Manufacturer, Infrastructure (airport, communications), Service Providers
(ground services, MROs, caterer, etc.), Airlines, etc. Here in Singapore,
we are truly blessed to be amid an established network of this ecosystem.
Major events held recently such as Singapore
Airshow 2022, Changi Aviation Summit 2022 and OneAviation Careers has signalled an
intention that Singapore is set for a recovery in the aviation sector. In the opening address of Mr S. Iswaran (Minister for Transport) during the Changi
Aviation Summit 2022 held last month, he shared on how Singapore can recover
from the pandemic while also building a strong runway for future growth
through three priorities – Capacity, Capabilities and Climate.
I urge you to find out more on the direction for Singapore’s aviation sector
through his full speech here. It is an exciting time for the aviation sector as it takes off, navigate,
and possibly undergo turbulences along the way. But together as a community,
I believe the industry can work towards a safe landing and reimagine a
sustainable future together! Stay tuned to the latest Engineering & Manufacturing
industry updates and job opportunities via my dedicated interest group here! To find out more
about opportunities in the aviation sector, reach out to me and we can kick
start this journey together. I wish you a good break and the next time you
fly, take time to appreciate the work that goes behind the scenes to make
your flight a pleasant one!
