Highlights of the
week: For more career
opportunities from various industries, please access Career Axis. Dear students, Hope everyone is taking some time to recharge yourself during
this summer vacation! If you are graduating soon in July, this is a well-deserved time
to take a short breather after many years of studying, exams, and projects
under the pre-employment education system. Whereas for students who still
have more semesters with us – do take this break to rejuvenate, recalibrate,
and get ready for the new academic year in a few months’ time. Even if you have already packed your summer vacation with
activities or internships, make sure to squeeze some break time into your
schedule! Sometimes a little break goes a long way. “What qualities/traits
are employers looking for in resume and interviews?” “How can I highlight
these qualities during and after hiring process?” These are possibly the 2 most asked questions during my numerous
career consultation sessions with students from different disciplines and
year of study. What’s definitive is this – when it
comes to hiring in recent years, more employers are increasingly looking
beyond a good academic qualification and are recruiting candidates with
certain qualities and characteristic traits that influence the type of
employee they may become. So, what are some of the qualities and traits that employers are
looking for? Positivity – With the constant and fast-changing business environments
both locally and globally, maintaining a good level of positivity can
certainly be constructively contagious among co-workers, especially to deal
with situations and obstacles that can occur overnight (e.g., Russian-Ukraine
conflict) or when overcoming setbacks (e.g., ongoing waves of COVID variant).
Flexibility – As we are living in the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex,
Ambiguous) business world, being flexible with solutions is critical for
businesses to succeed. Flexibility can be demonstrated from simple gestures
such as covering for co-workers when they call in sick, to adjusting the
business approach when handling difficult clients. Read up more on other valuable qualities and traits that
employers are looking for in the following articles: •

Candidates Additionally, it is good to highlight relevant experience from
CCA, hall activities, etc. in your resume as it offers hiring manager a
glimpse of your qualities/traits before they arrange for an interview. These
skills that you have acquired or demonstrated from your experience can be
further reinforced and elaborated during interviews to offer the employer
more context. ----- While you’re recharging yourself this summer
vacation, take a sneak peek at the following events coming up in the new
Academic Calendar for the Public Service and Maritime sector.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) recently appointed 18 students from six local
Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) as the inaugural batch of MaritimeSG
Youth Ambassadors (MYAs). Among the appointed MYAs, half of them are from NTU who will be championing the Maritime Industry
among their peers! Launched in February 2022 with a public call for applications,
the MYA programme was conceived to provide youth leaders below 30 years old
with a platform to champion a maritime movement and achieve a stronger
awareness for MaritimeSG through youth-to-youth advocacy. This will allow
Singapore to cultivate the next generation of advocates for MaritimeSG. CAO will be working closely with the MYAs to brainstorm and
bring activities to the NTU community, with the aim to showcase the diversity
of the Maritime industry. If you are keen to explore opportunities or just want to know
more about the Public Service, Maritime, and Non-Profit sectors, connect with
me over a consultation session!
