Dear Students,

Technology is revolutionising the way we live and work. The construction industry is no exception when it comes to being affected by rapid technological developments. In fact, the Covid-19 pandemic has arguably accelerated the need for technology to disrupt the industry as firms grapple with issues such as manpower shortage and material cost increases.

One technology that is being increasingly used by construction firms is Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC). This is a construction method that is part of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), one of three pillars of Singapore's Construction Industry Transformation Map. Besides manufacturing projects, PPVC's adoption rate in HDB Build-to-Order projects has also been rising steadily over the years since its pilot in 2017, with plans to increase its use even further in future BTO projects.

PPVC involves the fabrication of rectangular, brick-shaped 3D modules at an external factory to ensure quality workmanship. Analogous to the building of toys with Lego bricks, these modules are then transported to the construction site and installed to build the BTO flat. Either reinforced concrete or steel is used to make the modules.   It is estimated that outsourcing the fabrication work can raise productivity by up to 40%. Besides time savings, construction firms also require fewer workers on site and can hence reap cost savings.

Greener building materials are being used to minimise carbon footprint, IoT networks and digital tools on construction sites are used to optimise equipment performance, coordinate workflows, and enable collaboration. Data and analytics can also help contractors manage projects more effectively and help predict and prevent disruptions.

You are living in exciting times to witness and transform the construction industry and we encourage you to learn more about how the built environment is evolving, to better prepare yourself for a rewarding career.
