Dear Students, You may be aware that 71% of the Earth’s
surface is covered by water, but did you know that 80% of world trade is
carried by sea? In fact, Singapore is a leading player in this pivotal,
purposeful industry that is an integral pillar of the global supply
chain/logistics ecosystem and an enabler of world trade. Leveraging on our strategic geographic
position and global hub port, Singapore has been nurturing a maritime
services ecosystem that is anchored by
a group of international shipowners/operators together with a wide range of
maritime services players in the past decades.
Such companies include ship brokers, law firms
with maritime practices, marine insurers, ship financiers – and in recent
years, a nascent but growing pool of maritime technology start-ups. Indeed, Singapore’s holistic maritime
ecosystem has earned us recognition as the top international maritime capital
in global reports such as the DNV-Menon
Leading Maritime Cities of the World and the Xinhua-Baltic
International Shipping Index. What this means for Singapore’s youth – such
as yourselves – is that maritime is brimming with opportunities. The maritime
services cluster in particular welcomes those with diverse backgrounds
including maritime studies, business, computing, data science, engineering,
and more. Team 3.5, an NTU team was crowned
champion of Standard Chartered’s challenge
statement If you want a career in a global,
purpose-driven industry on the cusp of change, I invite you to connect with
the Singapore
Maritime Foundation (SMF).
Through our talent development programmes such as the Browse our
new ‘Own Your Future’ microsite, take the career purpose quiz,
and get a glimpse into the lives of five maritime professionals
whose stories will inspire you. SMF organises case competitions and manages an internship programme to connect you with the industry. There is the Young Executive and Students (YES) Club to plug you into a community with an interest in
the maritime sector
where you can build a network of friends. Welcome onboard. |
