Dear Students,

Feeling the heat from our warming planet recently?

Climate change, depletion of natural resources and rapid urbanisation are fuelling the world’s demand and imperative need for cleaner and more sustainable solutions. This shift towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy will result not only in new products and services but also intensify changes in production processes and business models. To cope with the transition, green talents, or better known as workers with the knowledge or skills needed to support environmental sustainability, become increasingly vital to accelerate the world’s transition to net zero.

According to LinkedIn's latest Global Green Skills Report 2022, the portion of green talent in the global workforce rose from 9.6% in 2015 to 13.3% so far in 2022 – that computes to a 38.5% growth rate! The greening of the economy will inevitably change the skills required and the tasks involved in many of the existing occupations. Most notably, at least one green skill is required among 10% of LinkedIn job postings, even for roles not in the environmental sector. This goes to show how sustainability is here to stay and the demand for green jobs will continue to increase across all industries.

While it can be commonly misperceived that only a niche degree can apply for green positions, there is in fact a career path for everyone when it comes to sustainability. If you are keen on starting a green career, consider upskilling yourself based on the Top 5 Skills in-demand for Careers in Sustainability identified by SkillsFuture.

As a kick-start, you can check out Global Compact Network Singapore’s Youth Alliance, a membership programme that aims to provide youths in Singapore with learning, volunteering, and career development opportunities in sustainability.

But for now, I wish you all the best in your upcoming exams!
