Dear Students,

How familiar are you with the chemical industry?

While the chemical industry may often be perceived as being limited to groundwork, chemicals and lab coats, the sector has in fact expanded its operational environment beyond such boundaries. The industry has sustained itself through a two-pronged approach – transitioning to the use of latest technology while simultaneously emphasising on environmental conservation efforts. In doing so, it has since welcomed an array of job opportunities that comes together with these 2 areas of development.

As the Covid pandemic persists, the chemical sector incorporates latest innovation and digitalisation to enhance its business processes and deal with constraints in offline businesses caused by the pandemic. This transformation is further boosted by Industry 4.0, which essentially calls for the integration of automated machines and greater reliance on the internet. Consequently, the nature of work in the chemical industry has become increasingly dependent on cutting edge technology and electronically controlled equipment, impacting various aspects such as Business Development, Human Resources and Technical side of companies.

The technological advancements are coupled with environmental conservation efforts to play a key role in sustainability of the chemical industry. Seeing that the production of plastics and energy supported by the fossil fuel industry remains a critical part for the supply of necessities, chemical companies have created new initiatives for recycling plastic to minimise the emission of greenhouse gases due to incineration of plastic waste. The sector also sources for alternative feedstock and continues to enhance its existing facilities for improved energy efficiency as part of its efforts to minimise the gaseous emissions from fossil fuels. Such continuous effort is required for sustainable growth of the industry, at least until renewable energy is sufficient to support production of the necessary global energy and essential materials.

In today’s world, the Chemical sector has not only proven its relevance by offering necessary energy and materials goods, but its significance has also considerably increased for its production of goods such as medicine and protective gear during the pandemic. The industry continues to support the world’s demand by upgrading itself through modernisation while cutting down its impact on the environment.
