Dear Students, A couple more weeks and you are almost done
with another semester! Some of you may already have secured jobs and
internships, while others may still be thinking about what to do. If you aren’t exactly sure about your
long-term career strategy, take time to ask yourself some questions to understand
your career expectations and goals better. DO I HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT I WANT TO DO? If you’re not sure what types of roles
excite you most, consider the method of elimination, and expose yourself to
as many areas of work as possible. The more areas you try, the better you get
at understanding your own likes and dislikes, strengths
and weaknesses. WHAT SKILLS DO I WANT TO DEVELOP
FURTHER? The right internship experience will
help you develop the skills you need, whether technical skills or softer attributes
such as interpersonal skills and people-management. Make sure you scrutinise
job descriptions and get a clear understanding of your job scope during
interviews. Find an internship where you’ll actually get
hands-on experience to learn what you want. WHAT ‘PERKS’ DO I WANT FROM THIS
INTERNSHIP? While an office hammock or free
artisanal coffee are great perks to enjoy at work, you should also think
about long-term benefits such as mentorship under a founder or tech leader
you admire, or exposure to an industry you’re unfamiliar with. Don’t waste an
internship opportunity on ‘just doing your work’ – think about how it can
benefit you in the long run. Some students find that interning with
‘big name’ MNCs can be beneficial for your job search in future, as potential
employers are likely to immediately recognise the company. On the other hand,
startups are usually great if you are looking for
an environment which provides more autonomy, a flat hierarchy, and want to
create a direct impact with your work. In a startup,
don’t be surprised if you are invited to management-level / key client
meetings (even as an intern), or if you get to try your hand at a variety of
side projects. Not only will this diversify your work experience and
competencies, the added exposure will also help you
discover and carve a clear career path. If you want to set up your own
business in future, make sure to take the chance to ask about your boss’
entrepreneurship journey too. Most importantly, every role provides a
unique set of advantages and challenges that help you develop professionally
and gain clarity of your career. These are just a few questions to get
you started. If working with a startup is on the
cards for you, make sure to check out SGInnovate’s
Summation programme, a Deep Tech apprenticeship experience that allows you to
