Dear Students,

What an exciting time to join the built environment sector! The industry is undergoing transformation with emphasis on digitalisation and leveraging technologies to increase productivity and efficiency.

Have you noticed that construction sites are now neater and cleaner with modules being transported, lifted by cranes, and stacked on top of one another? This method of construction is called DfMA or Design for Manufacturing and Assembly. The industry is now using technology to automate the way we build. DfMA harnesses automation and offsite prefabrication of modules to improve productivity and reduce reliance on manual labour at construction sites.

Experiencing this first-hand, Daryl Chew, NTU Civil Engineering graduate and Gold Medalist (Class of 2018), works at an integrated construction and prefabrication hub as an Innovation and Sustainability Lead. In his role, he oversees the automated production of precast components and works on research initiatives related to emerging technologies in DfMA and Sustainability. He strongly believes that how the built environment will transform in the next 10 years will depend on the next batch of Singaporeans joining the built environment workforce, especially the engineers who are the catalyst towards the success of any technological advancements.

To help connect and enhance collaboration amongst all stakeholders in the built environment sector, the industry is also digitalising workflows throughout the building lifecycle – from design, off-site fabrication, on-site assembly to the operations and maintenance of buildings. Work is moving at a faster pace as digitalisation facilitates checking, better planning and coordination as everyone is put on the same page.

If it has crossed your mind to contribute towards a more sustainable Singapore, the industry provides an opportunity for environmentalists-at-heart to construct greener buildings for our future generation. Designed and equipped with energy efficient solutions and the ability to harness solar power for its energy needs, join us in working towards super low energy buildings.

Finally, transformation is not complete without good HR and talent development practices. Industry firms are starting to adapt practices in a bid to attract and retain more talents. Some of the initiatives include flexi-week working arrangement, overseas development opportunities, mentorship programme and access to global expertise skill-sharing network to support staff’s personal growth and professional relationships.

You can do your part to transform the industry and build a more liveable, greener Singapore together with us. We look forward to having you join us!
