Dear Students, The
world is currently mired in many uncertainties that significantly impact the
semiconductor industry – the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the US-Sino
escalating trade tensions and the faltering of the global economy. Yet amid
the persistent headwinds faced past and present, outlook for the industry
continues to be a beacon of light for the global economy given the
acceleration of emerging technology. In
the digital age, technologies such as 5G/6G communications, IoT, electric
vehicles, and quantum computing will dominate the world of tomorrow. In
enabling and meeting the demands of these technologies, majority of global
chips are manufactured in Asia, with Singapore accounting about 6% of the
world’s chip supply alongside Taiwan, South Korea, and China. Singapore
has a growing and vibrant electronics industry that generated more than S$131
billion of output in 2020, accounting for about 8.4% of Singapore’s GDP. The
sector is made up of companies with key activities in semiconductors,
consumer electronics and information technology. At home, Singapore’s
manufacturing output expanded 13.8% year on year in May on the backdrop of
strong demand for semiconductors amid the global chip shortage. The
recent refresh of the Industry Transformation Map 2.0 unveiled by Deputy
Prime Minister, Heng Swee Keat, is also a testament that the Singapore
Government is placing Electronics Sector as a key driver in the future of
Singapore’s Manufacturing vision to grow 50% by 2030, while ensuring that we
reduce our carbon footprint in the process. The
3 thrusts which the Singapore Government will be paying close heed to will be
on People where it is integral to the industry, Sustainability
and Innovation of the industry. These key areas are also very much
aligned with what SSIA has already been advocating in the last 4 years and
especially so on the talent attraction and retention in the last 2 years. I
hope future talents, like yourself, will consider joining this vibrant
industry. More information about the semiconductor
industry and SSIA can be found on these links: §
