Axis. Dear Students, Have you ever thought about
how different our lives would be without technology? We are now living in a
fast-moving world where Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI),
Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data play an indispensable part in our
everyday lives and work. To stay relevant in these evolving times, industries
will need to constantly keep pace with the changing business needs and adapt
to emerging technologies. The manufacturing industry is no exception to such
transformation as we progress into Industry 4.0, otherwise known as I4.0. How did we come to
I4.0? The following illustration will give you a better understanding and
appreciation of our journey here. Industry 4.0 is about
harnessing the emerging technologies and connecting them together in an eco-system,
enabling us to work smarter and remain competitive. Sounds simple? Not
exactly. In fact, implementing Industry 4.0 does not stop at investing in new
technology and tools to improve manufacturing efficiency – It also involves
changing the way companies operate and grow, preparing the workforce to
embrace these changes, and at the same time ensuring that the model is both
sustainable and profitable. The manufacturing
sector is critical for Singapore as it accounts for more than 20% of our GDP. There is a need for
the manufacturing eco-system to respond to these global shifts and strengthen
our position as the leading industrial hub for companies internationally.
Locally, efforts are underway to harness the potential of smart manufacturing
technology. Examples of such initiatives are:
With more companies embarking
on this transformation and changing the way they operate,
we must also adapt and act accordingly. For starters, we can do so by
understanding the needs of the market, identify the gap, and if necessary, to
upskill ourselves for these changes. Rather than staying in our comfort zone,
we should be ready to learn new skills that befit this everchanging world we
live in. It is an exciting time
as we reimagine the future of manufacturing now that more companies are
moving towards Industry 4.0. If you are interested to find out more about
opportunities in the Manufacturing sector, book a consultation
session with me or join my interest group for
updates on the Engineering/Manufacturing industry. Wishing you all the
best for rest of the semester! This week’s e-blast is prepared by: Edwin Chen weilunedwin.chen@ntu.edu.sg Engineering & Manufacturing | Logistics & Transportation
