Dear Students,

Recent times have seen rapid advancements in automation and additive manufacturing, along with a growing demand for sustainability and energy efficiency. As such, in addition to being equipped with hard skills to solve more complex problems, today’s engineers must be proficient in ‘softer’ domains such as communication, critical thinking, and the ability to comprehend and process others’ views.

If you are a budding engineer, it is imperative for you to acquire discipline-based hard skills while in university. For instance, a civil engineering graduate will need to understand the fundamentals of fluid and structural mechanics. Similarly, a software engineer will need to master some primary coding languages to flourish in their work.

Besides that, engineers are required to effectively collaborate with other engineers, project supervisors, and managers across the table, as well as virtual projects across the globe. Hence, proficiency in soft skills is paramount to career success because engineers who have the right combination of hard and soft skills are almost certain to build their careers faster than those who don’t.

SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Looking at the bigger picture, sustainability and climate change are now issues that are moving beyond corporate lip service, with real world business costs, challenges, and opportunities. As part of Singapore’s commitment to net zero emissions and to build a sustainable city, the Government has launched the Singapore Green Plan, which outlines our sustainable development efforts and targets over the next decade. It is a multi-agency effort, with five key thrusts – City in Nature, Sustainable Living, Energy Reset, Green Economy and Resilient Future. This delivers a clear message that engineers have more opportunities and vital roles to play in this cross-disciplinary, complex socio-technical challenge that has the potential for global impact.

There are many prospects for engineers to work directly in the field of sustainability and contribute to climate change solutions. Taking my role with integrated infrastructure firm Mott MacDonald for example, I advise project teams and clients on reducing the environmental impact of infrastructure by proposing low carbon footprint structure systems and materials. Furthermore, my colleagues use data analytical skills to provide the most sustainable and efficient traffic routes for pedestrians. In various ways, an engineer can certainly contribute to a more sustainable city through different skills set.

IES-YEC Work Plan and Get Together 2022

The IES Young Engineers Committee (IES-YEC) has been running the Young Engineers Career Webinar Series since 2021 as part of our commitment to advance the competencies of young engineers. Distinguished speakers across a wide field of engineering disciplines have been invited to share their deep knowledge and insights with young engineers.

In line with Singapore Green Plan, we are planning to have more webinars related to sustainability topics and at the same time, start more initiatives to combat climate change – this is where you can chip in with your ideas!

IES-YEC participated in the AFEO Young Engineers Mid-Term Meeting held in Johor Bahru

During the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO) Young Engineers Mid-Term Meeting in August 2022, we actively took part in exchanging ideas and suggestions on specific topics, including sustainable cities, environmental engineering, clean energy, engineers’ mobility, and so on.

With the gradual opening of borders, this AFEO Mid-Term Meeting was a great opportunity to finally meet fellow young engineers across ASEAN, to learn from them and view problems from different dimensions and perspectives.

At IES-YEC, we can help you nurture your soft skills further, build your local and overseas networks, and link you up with mentors who will be there to guide you as you embark on your careers after graduation.
