Highlights of the week: For more career opportunities from various industries, please access Career Axis. Dear Students, Too often lately have we been hearing escalating and worsening weather
conditions and disasters around the world. Intense rain events affecting even
our nearest surrounding neighbours, dangerous
heatwaves, strong tropical cyclones, and coastal cities inundated by rising
sea levels are impacting many globally. Even in Singapore where we are seemingly less affected by these
extreme weather events, concerns for climate change and support for
environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations have steadily
grown, and demand for cleaner renewable energy sources continues to
accelerate over the years. In a previous
ministerial forum, National Development Minister Demond
Lee had cited climate action to be the “defining fight of our times” and our
future generations. To that end, to further complement the Singapore Green Plan 2030, there is also a need to grow green
talent to advance Singapore’s national agenda
on sustainable development. The career prospects and outlook for Asia-Pacific is extremely
positive – increasing global consumption of electricity through solar panels,
wind turbines and other renewable technologies is expected to climb very fast
over the next few years. APAC is poised to become the key destination for
renewable-energy development and investment with capacity expected to
increase by about 2 terawatts by 2030. The potential and need in the region
are significant, and with better government policy, plans and coordination to
create a safer investment environment, renewables will continue to reduce
fossil fuel’s share of the region’s energy mix. This transition to clean energy will generate massive growth in energy
jobs over time and require sophisticated technology skills to bring
competitive approaches to market. Hence, latest energy jobs will demand a
different set of skills than what is required for energy jobs today. It is
therefore advantageous to take this time in school to read widely and network
proactively with industry practitioners to better understand and hone in-demand skills to successfully embark on a career
within the sector. Besides being passionate, having a constant awareness of economic and
technology development in energy is key to join this emerging sector. The world is calling for young and talented
talents to innovate and tackle technological challenges. And when it comes to
the skills, a combination of both technical and soft skills is what most
companies are looking for and you can expect to get out of your comfort zone. Extracted from Industry Skills Report 2021 by Coursera under Energy
and Utilities, here are skills proficiency in the Business, Technology and
Date Science domains that you may take reference and action on. (Click to enlarge
