New thinking – why not choose an
industry and then a career?

Dear Students,
I enjoy my work and
I know you aspire to do the same, whichever line you eventually choose to
be in. I have found that the secret to enjoying my work is - to first enjoy
the industry I work for - whatever my work happens to be.
You see, we are
often advised to choose a career. And to prepare for it, we choose a course
of study. But once you graduate, why not choose an industry to be in and
develop your career within it? Keep your options open and explore numerous
possibilities to develop your skillsets – consider choosing a great
industry like Aviation and Aerospace and proceed to grow your career
within it. You can play different roles at different stages of your career
and get to exercise the full range of your talent. Isn’t this superior to
choosing a single job function and moving between industries?
Across my career,
while never actually having worked in an aerospace company, I have most
often chosen Aerospace whenever the opportunity arose. I have been involved
in Aviation and Aerospace in different ways – from air defence as an NSman, to materials engineering and research, industry
policy and planning, infrastructure development (Seletar Aerospace Park),
investment promotion as well as manpower development.
Wait a minute you
say – you are involved in Aviation and Aerospace but never as a flight crew
nor aerospace engineer? Yes, I also want to share that whatever your course
of study and area of expertise, you will find that the industry needs
someone like you. There are people of diverse professions playing
important roles within the industry – business development, digital
marketing, communications, talent recruitment, finance, app development,
procurement and supply chain management, fleet management planning,
aircraft engineering, repair development, materials science, data analysis,
human factors engineering, industrial engineering, etc.
Finally, this is a
particularly interesting time to be in the aerospace industry. You know
well how the pandemic has pressed the big RESET button for the
industry. As recovery begins, all Aviation and Aerospace businesses are
embarking on exciting new ideas – to build back better and more
sustainably, to redefine their market space, their business model and their brand. Do consider choosing Aviation and
Aerospace – be part of this great RESET and help Singapore’s Air Hub to
regain a pole position in the post-pandemic world.
