Welcome to Sam's Home. I was born and brought up in China--- in the famous "City of Mountains": Chongqing. I received my Bachelor of Engineering (1982) in Metallic Materials at the Northeastern University, Shenyang, Master of Engineering (1984) in Metallic Materials at the Central Iron and Steel Research Institute, Beijing, and Ph.D. (1991) in Ceramic Materials at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, Wisconsin, USA, with the following titles of theses, respectively: "Re-crystallization Map of GH128 Superalloy", "Densification Mechanisms of K17 Superalloy During Hot-isostatic Pressing " and "Melt-migration Mechanisms of (CoMg)2SiO4-Basalt Structrural Ceramics". (University of Wisconsin-Madison ranks 8th best in the United States of America)

I came to Singapore in 1991 as Research Fellow in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the Nanyang Technological University, and joined in Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) (then "Gintic") in 1993 spear-heading into thin film technology. After 7 years in the industry-related research environment, I decided to come back to academic. So at the turn of the Millennium,  I made a "home-run" back to the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering as associate professor and was promoted to Full Professor on 1st October 2006. I was featured in Who's Who in Engineering Singapore (published October 2007); featured in 26th, 27th and 28th editions of Who's Who in the World. My other appointments include Honorary Professor of the Institute of Solid State Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (since November 2004); Guest Professor of Zhejiang University (since November 2006) and Guest Professor of Harbin Institute of Technology (since September 2007). I became Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, UK, in October 2007.

My research interests include preparation and characterization of hard and yet tough ceramic nanocomposite coatings, functional thin films, biological coatings, drug deliveryfor and coatings for clean energy. I have published 11 books. I tutored the 1st year "Materials Science and Engineering " ; taught 4th year "Electronic Manufacturing Processes", graduate course "M6156-Advanced Materials Characterization Techniques", etc. Currently I'm tutoring 1st year " MA1002-Materials Engineering" and 2nd year " MA2004-Manufacturing Processes " and teaching 4th year "MA4838 -nonconventional manufacturing processes" and graduate course "M6304-Ultra-precision and Micromachining Processes". I served as Senator of Nanyang Technological University for two terms(May 2008-August 2012); Member of the Committee on Committees of the Senate of Nanyang Technological University (December 2008-May 2009); Member of The NTU Research Council, Sub-Committee for the Discipline Cluster: Physics and Engineering, (12 December 2011- December 2015). I served the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Letters (NNL) as the founding Editor-in-Chief (April 2008 to December 2015), during which impact factor of the journal rose from nil to 1.444;

My current other responsibilities include: founding and current President of the Thin Films Society (Since 2009); Principal Editor for Journal of Materials Research (JMR) since November 2003, Associate Editor for Materials Science: Advanced Science Letters, Since July 2007; Editorial Board Member: Surface and Coatings Technology Since June 2012; Elected member to the Board of MAE, NTU (1 July 2017 to 30 June 2020); Technical Assessor for Singapore Accredidation Council Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (1 June 2017 to 31 March 2021). And I also serve as the Series Editor of the Book Series on "Advances in Materials Science and Engineering" with CRC Press since August 2010. There are 14 books in the series as at 2016. My other academic journal editorial involvement: Frontier of Materials Science in China (Jan 2007), among others.
