Video Drama as the Main FYP |

Students who produce a video
FYP must have taken at least one relevant production-related
course [i.e. BAV, Broadcast Journalism, Audio/Radio I/II,
Video/TV I/II or Scriptwriting] and demonstrate that they
are able to make a significant contribution to the project.The
group size must be three or four students.
Moderation Submission
The finished video must be of high technical quality, i.e. the video must be shot on industry-standard cameras and edited on machines with high-end resolution.
The preferred minimum duration of the video is 12 minutes: the maximum duration allowed is 24 minutes.
The students hold the copyright for the video and the copyright text at the end of the video should clearly indicate this (i.e. © student(s) name, 2007). However, the students must also include the NTU logo and a text card in the credits that reads,
"This work was produced as final-year project in the School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore."

For evaluation and grading, each group must submit 3 DVDs and 3 copies of a written summary of their video project (one each for the supervisor and two moderators). Each DVD must be clearly labeled with the video title, video duration and the names of the students responsible for the video.
The number of pages for the written summary should range from 35 - 50 pages, minus appendices. Each written summary must be presented in ring binding with clear, plastic cover and card stock backing.

Video Evaluation Criteria (70%)
The contents of the finished video where marks will be apportioned include:
• Story originality
• Characterization
• Opening and closing sequences
• Overall visual storytelling
• Direction and performance of actors
• Production techniques - the overall quality of pictures and sound which reflects the craft of directing, shooting and editing
• Level or degree of difficulty (technical applications and concept) |

Written Summary (20%)
The contents of the written summary where marks will be apportioned include: (list is not exhaustive and not in order of importance)
• The story premise (synopsis, title and duration included)
• The target audience and distribution method (festival or t.v.) and rational
• The research of the story (provide bibliography where appropriate)
• The audition process
• The production treatment (style and structure)
• (Optional) Analysis of the story development
• (Optional) Feedback analysis from a target focus group
The appendices should include:
• The budget statement (provide sources where appropriate)
• The production schedule
• The production credit list
• The final dramatic script
• Shooting script and storyboards when used
• Releases for actors and/or interview subjects
• Notice of copyright permission for any non-original material
• Location permissions and/or any correspondence pertaining to location permission
• (Optional) Feedback analysis from a target focus group
• A press kit which contains the following items:
• Production Stills: Students must include hardcopy examples of their production stills in the appendices of their FYP reports for moderation. The examples of the stills should be bound in the report along with the other appendices. A copy from a color laser printer on A4 paper is acceptable, but the image must be clearly discernable. Prints from film are also acceptable, but they need to be clearly labeled and displayed in such a way that they can also be included in a bound volume.
• Artwork: Doing special artwork is not a requirement for the FYP report. But where it has already been done, students should include it with their press kit. Any artwork or design should be supplied with the final FYP submission. Any labels must include the title of the project, total run time (TRT) and the producer's or director's name and contact information. Descriptive information (i.e., who is in the shot) for each image should be provided.
• A video fact sheet (one-page single spaced 12 pt.): The video fact sheet should include the title of the project, TRT, a brief description of the video and the date it was completed. The info sheet should also include the names of the principle crew members, brief descriptions if appropriate, and current contact information (hand phone and email). If appropriate, the students may also want to include principle cast members.
• Project background sheet (one-page single-spaced 12 pt): The project background sheet can include, but is not limited to, information about the inspiration for the project, the challenges faced, how they feel about the project, what they hope to do with it, what's in the future for the filmmakers, etc. This information sheet needs to include several direct quotes from the project members about the movie. In other words, there should be several comments which are in quotes and attributed to a specific project member.
• Included on both the fact sheet and the movie background sheets, there should be a short paragraph which reads:
"This work was produced as final-year project in the School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore."
• Producer's Warranty: SCI will provide a sample letter which the producer(s) need to download from the website and sign. The students should include one hardcopy in their FYP report for moderation and a signed, scanned digital copy in their soft-copy submissions.
NOTE: A producer’s warranty is not a substitute for obtaining copyright permission and licenses. It is merely a declaration that the producers have done so or that all material is original. |

Oral Defense (10%)
Students should be prepared to participate in a Q & A session lasting no longer than 25 minutes. Presentations are not required, but if they are given, should contain new or additional information not covered in the video or report. Each group should anticipate questions from the panel, which consists of the group's supervisor and two moderators. Each member in the group should take turns to speak.
The following aspects will be examined:
• Are all members well prepared?
• Evidence of critical thinking and evaluation
• The clarity of the presentation (if appropriate)
Students will be graded individually for their contributions to the project. Students should see that members of the group assume responsibility for their own share of project tasks. |
Archival Submissions
A soft copy of the final written summary will be handed in to the School's resource library in accordance with specifications determined by the FYP committee. All appendices, release forms, copyright and location permissions must be scanned and included in the softcopy reports. For the soft copy submissions of the FYP report, all images need to be in digital format. If the originals were shot on 35mm film, then the negatives and print copies need to be scanned and included in the report.
Each video group must also submit one master copy each in DVD and Beta to the technicians' office. The School will provide the Beta tape and DVD for its library copies. Students must submit two (2) additional soft copies on CD of the complete press kit to the School's resource library. |
