  Final Year Project (FYP) Guidelines

What is FYP?
The purpose of the FYP is to provide you with the opportunity to showcase the abilities and talents you have acquired during your time at SCI. While your FYP topic can be something which challenges your skills and furthers your education, you should not undertake something which is completely new to you (i.e. don’t plan on making a video if you’ve never taken a production class). Choose your group members, supervisor and project carefully. You’ll be spending a lot of time with one another! The FYP carries eight academic units.

Group Members
Although students may do a project alone, this is not encouraged. It is NOT necessary for all group members to be from the same division. In fact, you are encouraged to find partners who can complement your abilities and skills.

Types of project Minimun number of students per group Maximum number of students per group
Photojournalism   2
Scriptwriting   2
Video Projects 3 4
All others   4

Supervisor
1 Students are encouraged to discuss their potential projects with different faculty members and seek their opinions and input.
2
You can retrieve a list of available supervisors and their areas of expertise.
3
Verbal consent from the supervisor is required before student make online confirmation
(project see below).
4
To confirm the project online, students will need the following information
• Project Type
• Team members
• Supervisor
• Topic (This is optional for the initial registration. Many groups provide a working title only.)
• Brief description (Again, this is option for the initial registration.)
5
The FYP Committee will review the match after the confirmation. If the Committee finds that the fit is inappropriate, it will recommend a change in supervisor.

  Types of Projects
Students can choose to do any of the following types of FYP, each with its own grading criteria: Journalism Writing, Photojournalism, Scriptwriting, Video Documentary, Video Drama, Audio/Radio, Multimedia, Promotional, and Research. You may also elect to combine elements from the above projects to create a hybrid project.

Online Confirmation and Registration of FYP
The deadline for Online Confirmation of FYP for the 2005/2006 academic year is May 1 - July 25, 2005. Don’t worry if you haven’t worked out all of your project details (i.e. title or description). The FYP coordinator will open the system up again in January in order for you to update your project details. After students are registered in the FYP database, then the FYP coordinator will submit their names to the Registrar’s Office for official registration in CS402 (FYP). Students will use StudentLink to confirm the following:

1 Team members (need to provide matriculation numbers for all members of your team)
2
Supervisor
3
Topic (provide a working title)
4
Brief description (say a few words about your idea/topic)
