  Audio/Radio Project

Beginning in the 2005/2006 academic year, students who produce an audio FYP must have taken at least one relevant production-related course or participated in the audio broadcast practicum and be able to demonstrate that they are able to make a significant contribution to the project.

The project will result in a final product that can be a radio program, a compact-disc (CD), or enhanced CD incorporating multimedia and/or interactivity. The content of the audio program should be conceptualized by the students and of a distinctive genre (egs: documentary, drama, magazine or news format) The final product should preferably be in English and must meet professional standards for broadcast on air or distribution on CD/DVD. That is, the audio should be of high quality and not contain distortions, except where appropriate for creativity; and if multimedia is used, it should be user-tested to ensure functionality. Additionally, the producers should obtain copyright permission for any non-original material included in the program as well as performance releases if appropriate.

Moderation Submissions
The preferred minimum duration of the product is 15 minutes; the maximum duration for a radio production is 60 minutes and for a CD is 75 minutes.

Each Audio/Radio group must submit three CD/DVD copies of their final mix or finished product (one each for the supervisor and moderators), for archiving, evaluation and grading.

Each CD/DVD must be clearly labeled with the title, duration and the names of the students responsible for its production. Accurate identifications should be included (Track ID's on CD/DVD). The archive master must be presented packaged and all label information must be typed or printed. If the product is intended for radio broadcast, a program cue sheet (cue material) and a production/presenter's script should also be included.

The students hold the copyright for their projects and the copyright information-within the body of the program and on the packaging-should clearly indicate this (i.e. © student(s) name, 2006). Additionally, the students must also include the following acknowledgement (at the end of the program as well as on the packaging) that reads,

"This work was produced as final year project in the School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore." The NTU logo should accompany all written acknowledgements. It is available at SCI's FYP website.

Any press materials about the project should also include the above acknowledgements.

Along with the products, each group must also submit three bound copies of a written summary of the product and/or a report on the production of their product, (one each for the supervisor and moderators), for evaluation and grading. o The minimum number of pages for the written summary/report is 10 and the maximum is 30.

Evaluation Criteria
1 Audio Evaluation Criteria (70%)

The following will be taken into consideration during evaluation of the audio project:
• Story or content originality
• Entertainment/educational/information value
• Audience appeal/demographic accuracy
• Production technique/quality (appropriate for facilities used)
• Proper documentation of copyright permissions and clearances if appropriate
2 Written Summary Evaluation Criteria (20%)

The report should include the following:
• Creative concept (includes project proposal, working sheet, budget, schedule, etc.)
• Production/presenter's script
• Bibliography/references
• Overall presentation of document
• Research sources/techniques
• Conclusion (critique and concluding remarks)
• Focus group evaluation of project (findings and recommendations)
• Copyright permission documentation, performer's clearances if appropriate and any other needed clearance forms
• Peer evaluation

If the project is undertaken by a group, the members will need to complete a separate evaluation of the contribution of each of the other members of the group. They will be used to assist in the distribution of marks within the group. If a major disparity is evident within the evaluations, the group will meet with the supervisor to discuss the evaluations and rectify disparity.
3 Oral Defense (10%)

Students should be prepared to participate in a Q & A session lasting no longer than 25 minutes. Presentations are not required, but if they are given, should contain new or additional information not covered in the video or report. Each group should anticipate questions from the panel, which consists of the group's supervisor and two moderators. Each member in the group should take turns to speak.

The following aspects will be examined:
• Are all members well prepared?
• Evidence of critical thinking and evaluation
• The clarity of the presentation (if appropriate)

Students will be graded individually for their contributions to the project. Students should see that members of the group assume responsibility for their own share of project tasks.

Submissions to SCI for Archiving
A soft copy of the final written summary will be handed in to the School's resource library in accordance with specifications determined by the FYP committee. All appendices, release forms, and permissions must be scanned and included in the softcopy reports. In addition, the audio project must be submitted on a CD/DVD for archival purposes.
