Subject Exemptions for Polytechnic Graduates

Guidelines for Exemptions
Generally, Polytechnic graduates may be exempted from up to one academic year's equivalent of workload, inclusive of full exemption from Professional Internship, if applicable.

Exemptions should preferably be for skills-based subjects such as Publication Design, Web Design and Technologies where such skills could be easily transferable and learnt. Certain introductory subjects to Journalism, Electronic and Broadcast Media, Promotional Communication and Communication Research may be exempted for those with Mass Communication background.

Exemptions from conceptual subjects are not encouraged as the level and contents covered are different from those at the Polytechnics even though subject titles may be the same.

Exemptions may be for specific Core subjects (the lower level only) or Prescribed Electives if they are relevant in contents. Otherwise, the exemptions may be applied towards fulfilling General Electives requirements.

Exemptions may also be granted for Professional Internship (PI) if the internship done during the Polytechnic days is relevant to studies at SCI. Such exemption may be full or partial and may include any after-graduation jobs that Polytechnic graduates have been working in. However, this does not automatically apply to every Polytechnic graduate with a mass communication or related diploma. Full or partial exemption refers to six or three months' exemptions respectively, without variations, and is determined by the relevance and period of internship and/or jobs done. If partial exemption is granted, Polytechnic graduates will complete the remaining PI duration of three months during the University vacation.

Note that subject exemptions are granted on a case-by-case basis with grades obtained from the Polytechnics and changes to the School curriculum forming part of the basis for exemptions. Please note that students who wish to submit their applications for course exemption should do so at the start of the first semester of each academic year.

Notes for Students Who Wish to Accelerate and Graduate in 3 or 3½ Years
Students should indicate their choice of primary concentration during the second semester of the first year of study, around March/April. This is to prepare for registration of Year 2 subjects in June.

Students who are granted full PI exemption should plan to take the higher level Core subject and Prescribed Electives early as some classes may not be offered during the second semester when the third-year students are on PI attachment.

Students should start sourcing for their Final Year Project topics and supervisors during the second semester of the second year of study.
