Synopsis

Blogs are an avenue of expression of many youthful Singaporeans. This is a refreshing break from the silence-is-golden stance in many parts of Asia. And so the flowering of thoughts through blogging should be encouraged.

On the other hand, the National Internet Advisory Committee has recommended that blogs should be treated like websites for the purposes of regulation. And bloggers who have written racist remarks have been jailed. The lesson is that blogs are subject to the laws of the land of Singapore.

Our concern in the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, is that without some understanding of the media law landscape, bloggers are likely to find themselves falling afoul of the law.

The aim of this workshop is to expose bloggers to the law as may be applicable. It will cover the basic principles of copyright and defamation law and elements of objectionable content under Singapore law.

The workshop leaders are three faculty members in the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information who have written on and taught media law and policy issues at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
