Knowledge Management Research Cluster

The field of knowledge management has not adequately met its goals of transforming information sharing and collaborations in organisations. Lucier and Torsilera (1997) claim that 84 percent of KM programs fail to have any real impact. Despite these problems, knowledge management addresses a clearly perceived need for innovation, whether expressed in terms of the knowledge economy, knowledge workers, or intellectual capital management.

The Knowledge Life Cycle (Birkinshaw and Sheehan, 2002) states that knowledge progresses through 4 stages (creation, mobilisation, diffusion and commoditization) and as it develops overtime, knowledge becomes accessible to more and more people – first in the organisation and finally, to the general public – therefore, companies must use different strategies to realise the maximum value of the knowledge flows. Knowledge management in its traditional approach addresses the supply side of the life cycle process. It largely views knowledge as fungible organisational assets to be organised and made accessible through the many information and communication tools and coordinated through changes in work practices that facilitate collaboration and information-sharing.

This research in this cluster seeks to extend the focus from supply to the demand side of the knowledge flows, from management to mobilisation. We propose the Knowledge Fusion framework that aims to extend and improve the effectiveness of the knowledge flows by adding the elements of knowledge mobilisation that are centred on the individual and demand side. The framework focuses on two components - ‘Knowledge Embodiment’ and ‘Knowledge ‘Regimes of Truth’ - to provide a comprehensive and parsimonious intellectual mapping of knowledge in action in the organizations. These concepts address the philosophical, political and social forces that may be significant and, if overlooked, can impact the practicalities of knowledge management. The research seeks to build on the Knowledge Fusion framework by testing the validity of its constructs, and building a database of case studies to illustrate the findings and results, hence evolving our theory-building.

Title of Project: Development of the Knowledge Fusion Framework

Description: The Knowledge Fusion Framework will be formulated, operationalized and theory-tested. Reality-testing and value-testing in the environment is required to understand how the framework can be applied to helping business innovators manage the knowledge of innovation and creation. A questionnaire instrument will be developed, and a schema of content designed to analyse the interviews.

Title of Project: Application of the Knowledge Fusion Framework

Description: 20 companies which have won the Singapore Enterprise 50 (E50) awards in the last few years will be selected to participate in the study. The E50 awards require that candidates have a track record of innovation, earnings growth, profitability and strong local participation in ownership. Such a “convenience” sample is well-suited to the goals of testing the usefulness, applicability and potential impact of Knowledge Fusion framework on the next generation of Singapore’s growth leaders. The framework will be applied to explore and understand the processes that entrepreneurs adopt in their creation of ideas, sharing of their ideas, and mobilizing their ideas/knowledge to build successful products/services. We will also map the entrepreneurs ‘social networks’ using the social network analysis methodology as well as ‘community of practice’ to understand further the environments that contribute to their creation and mobilizing of ideas/know how etc.

Title of Project: Extending the Knowledge Fusion Framework to IT Outsourcing

Description: This project examines how knowledge flows from the clients to the vendors or vice versa in identifying IT specifications and requirements in outsourcing contracts. Managing technical specifications and knowledge flows between two disparate parties require a good understanding of the knowledge fusion and mobilization of the processes of the knowledge flows. This study will capture the knowledge flows of some 20 companies (between the clients and the vendors). Interviews will be conducted between the clients and the vendors and their communications will be coded for analyses.
