| Overall Computer and Internet use among Secondary One students |
| • |
96% of the students were computer users. |

92% of the students were Internet users. |

Internet users, on the average, had 2.8 years of online experience. |

The top three online activities were information seeking, online entertainment, and online chat. |

The main reasons for not using the Internet were the lack of computer or lack of a ·good enough computer·, lack of interest and lack of time. |

| Family, Social Interaction and Studies |

Most Internet users reported no change in the amount of time spent in face-to-face interaction with their family members after they began using the Internet. |

There was not much difference between heavy and light Internet users in terms of average times spent with families per week. |

Internet usage did not seem to affect personal interaction with family as heavy users spent 18.4 hours per week socializing face-to-face with their family compared to 17.8 hours spent by light users and 11 hours spent by non-users. |

Most Internet users did not use email to communicate with their families or relatives. |

Most of the Internet users indicated that there was no change in their social interaction with their families after using the Internet. |

Heavy users spent more time than light users socialising face-to-face with friends after school. |

| Attitudes towards the Internet |

Heavy users tended to feel more positive towards the Internet than light users. |

A higher proportion of heavy users than light users felt that the Internet was important, useful, convenient and interesting. |

More heavy users tended to think that the Internet helps student to study more effectively than light users. |

Most Internet users remained neutral in attitude about Internet making people less sociable. |

However, most users agreed that Internet increases people·s contact with others who share similar interests. |

| Media Use |
| • |
Heavy Internet users were heavy media consumers while light Internet users were light media consumers. |

Overall, more heavy users felt that the Internet had decreased their time spent on television, radio and newspaper while the same percentage of heavy and light users felt that their time spent on the books and magazines remained the same. |

Television scored the highest in terms of importance among all the media for general information, local and world news, and entertainment for both heavy and light Internet users. |

Entertainment/arts was ranked the most popular category in online information search, followed by hobbies and sports. |

Generally, more users reported visiting local websites than overseas websites in their information searches. |
| • |
About half to two-third of the users said they had never seen violent content, hateful messages, or sexual content on the Internet. |
