The Singapore Internet Project (SIP), launched in 1999, is the first nation-wide survey of Internet usage and its social impact in Singapore. Its objective is to collect empirical evidence to show the impact of the Internet, which has been adopted rapidly by many Singaporeans in the last few years. The research has been designed as a longitudinal
project to assess the impact of the new medium on individual perception, attitudes and behaviours, and to identify any effect on families as well as society at large. The focus of the study includes Internet usage patterns, e-commerce activities, family and social interaction, perception of Internet, and media use.
SIP is also a part of the World Internet Project (WIP), coordinated jointly by the research teams from the School of Communication and Information (SCI) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Center for Communication Policy, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The two teams, being the founding members of the WIP, worked out a general research framework and a platform for comparative research on how people utilise the Internet and how the interactive technology will impact individuals and societies within as well as across nations. A number of research teams worldwide, including those from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Hungary, France, Italy, and Sweden, have joined this collaborative project. Results from the WIP will be presented in international workshops, conferences and journals.
The SIP team is led by Professor Eddie Kuo, Dean, SCI, as Project Director and Associate Professor Alfred Choi, also from SCI, as Principle Researcher. Other researchers include Associate Professor Christina Soh, Nanyang Business School, and Associate Professor (Adjunct) Arun Mahizhnan and Assistant Professor Lee Wai Peng, both from SCI. The SIP research team has contributed several reports, conference papers and publications based on the SIP data collected from the years 1999, 2000 and 2001.
