| Tapping Informal Networks “Guanxi” with Information & Communication Technologies: Empowering Rural Doctors in Xi'an, China |
As part of their final year project, three undergraduates from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information have embarked on a research project that examined how information communication technologies (ICTs) are able empower rural doctors in Xi’an, China. In December 2009, the team (comprising Tran Khanh Phuong, Felicia Ng and Cathy Chia) conducted in-depth interviews, focus groups, and interacted with rural villagers and key stakeholders. The objective was to uncover how ICT devices (such as mobile phones) could help to improve the healthcare status in rural China. Emphasis was placed on facilitating information flow to rural doctors to enable them to become better medical practitioners. The implications of the finding will have direct impact on the healthcare status in rural China. This project is supervised by Dr Arul Chib.
