The Learning Environment

The courses are conducted through lectures, tutorials and lab sessions, and are designed to provide a balanced coverage of theoretical developments and practical applications. Lectures are held at the university's state-of-the-art lecture theatres equipped for multimedia presentations, with access to the Internet and the university's online learning system. Small-group discussions during tutorials allow students to explore issues in some depth. Regular laboratory sessions give students hands-on practical experience with information handling tools and techniques. Hands-on experience with information technology is a significant feature of the programme.

The University’s online learning system, called EveNTUre, and the School’s intranet Web site are heavily used to support teaching and learning. Lecture notes, slides and other teaching materials as well as student projects are posted and maintained on these environments.

Interaction with staff and fellow students is another important part of the learning process. Students come from diverse backgrounds, professions and subject areas. They include teachers and polytechnic lecturers, IT professionals, multimedia product developers, graphic designers, library managers, business managers, sales and marketing personnel, administrative officers, engineers, bank officers, auditors, medical records officers, information analysts, architects, lawyers and doctors. Students find that networking and interacting with classmates from other disciplines to be an enriching experience.

The courses are taught by an international faculty with a wide variety of professional and academic backgrounds and expertise. Faculty members were educated at well-known universities and have worked as information professionals in many different types of organisations in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Australia as well as in this region. Working with faculty members on research or development projects is a third important feature of the programme. Students have remarked on how approachable the professors are and the mentoring attitude of our faculty members.

Information Studies Laboratory
The Division of Information Studies has its own purpose-built lab, equipped with state-of-the-art computing facilities and resources to support its teaching and research programmes. The lab, with two training rooms and a seminar room, has about 100 Pentium PCs that are local area networked to Windows servers and printer servers. All workstations have access to the university campus-wide network-based services that include the university library catalogue and digital library, CD-ROM based databases and Internet access. The lab also provides Internet access to several online information services and has its own range of CD-ROM databases, multimedia products, software packages and authoring tools.

The lab also maintains several Web servers, a unix server and a linux server for research and development projects. Students also have access to other lab facilities in the School, including a human-computer interaction and usability lab and a multimedia lab.

What Our Students Say About the MSc Programme

How the IS Programme Has Helped Me...

Lee Chye Seng, Systems Manager

This course gave me more insights into how information (both printed and electronic) should be organised and presented to a user. As a software developer, I will now evaluate the user's perception and design the graphical interface more carefully. The course provided me the soft skills and essential concepts required for systems development.

Lim Sey Peng, Mass Rapid Transit Engineer

I would recommend that students in other disciplines take the IS course. I come from an engineering background and did not realise the importance of information handling. It is through the course that I discover that the proper management of information is an important skill.

Steve Lee, Architect

To get really ahead of others. I'm setting up a Web server in the office (http://www.jyhuang.com/).

Ng Hui Tong, Businessman

I'm a businessman. The course provides me many business opportunity windows, and I hope to turn a window into a garden!

Neo Cheng Imm, Engineer

I'm able to apply the concept of information management to my job as administrator.

New Chin Ker, Richard Xu Rong and Vincent Chong, Technopreneurs

The Information Studies course provided us with a rich environment not only for acquiring information skills, but also for learning the value and power of information. It plugged us into a network of professionals (our fellow students) from a cross-section of the country's economy as well as researchers in IT and information processing, whom we can tap for ideas, advice and support.

What I Like About the IS Programme...

Cheryl Marie Cordeiro, Miss Singapore/Universe 1999, currently Graduate Student in English Language

The revelation of many facets of information, getting to sources that I never knew existed!

Choo Meng Foo, Architect

The taste of power and fun in experimenting within a network-based environment.

Leong Yoke Khuan, Teacher

I like the IT aspect of the course. I gained a lot of knowledge about the information superhighway, the WWW and multimedia. I also learnt a lot about how information is organised.

What I Like About the Division of Information Studies...

Anne Goh, Medical Records Officer

I found the faculty members to be very caring and willing to help, regardless of their busy schedules. Moreover, the Department has a well thought out curriculum which is what originally attracted me to the Division of Information Studies. Clearly, our Division gets the highest marks for student involvement in the executive decision-making process. I am extremely proud of the partnership between the students and the administration that has produced tremendous advancement of the Division in a short period of time.

Lim Mi Mei, Teacher

This MSc programme is receptive to students' feedback, and tailored the courses to meet the demands, making it a very pleasant and satisfactory learning experience for students.
