Answers to FAQs
What is the Mission and Vision of the Division?
Division's Vision
To be Asia's innovative leader in information and knowledge education and research.
Division's Mission
Educating and nurturing a new generation of information and knowledge professionals, and advancing knowledge for the betterment of society.
Is Credit Given for Courses Taken Elsewhere?
Since the programme is so short and students have to learn many things in a limited amount of time, credit exemptions are usually not given. Instead, students are encouraged to take courses in areas not covered in courses they have taken elsewhere. If the student has taken a course elsewhere that is similar in content to a core course, the student can apply to take an elective course in lieu of the core course.
Is Scholarship Assistance Available?
A small number of tuition waivers and graduate assistantship positions are available for outstanding applicants.
What Employment Opportunities Are There?

How are Students Selected?
The selection criteria used are the student's academic record, work experience, interpersonal skills, and suitability for work in the information profession. As the number of places is limited and entry is competitive, applicants may be required to take an entrance test and attend an interview.
Can Non-Singaporeans Enrol?
Yes, but certain conditions apply. International students have to apply for a Student's Pass to pursue a course of full-time study in Singapore, unless they are holders of a valid immigration pass (e.g. Employment Pass) issued by the Singapore Immigration & Registration Department. The Student's Pass is issued only to full-time students and not to part-time students. International applicants, not currently employed in Singapore, may therefore apply for admission only to the university's full-time programmes. International applicants who wish to take the programme part-time should obtain employment in Singapore before applying for admission.

Yes, it is assumed that students have a reasonable degree of IT literacy. Students will also find that having ready access to a PC and Internet access will assist significantly with their study. However, the Division has a well-equipped computer laboratory that students can access throughout the day.
How is the Coursework Assessed?
Each course is assessed by coursework (such as assignments, projects, essays or exercises) worth a total of 30% or 40%, and an examination lasting three hours worth 70% or 60%.
Can I Get a Master's Degree by Research Only?
In addition to the MSc (Information Studies) programme, the Division also offers programmes leading to the Master of Applied Science (MASc) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.
The MASc and the PhD programmes are based mainly on research. Students in these programmes have to complete a substantive piece of research and write a thesis.
The MASc programme is for applicants who already have an MSc in Information Studies or a Bachelor's degree plus substantial experience and knowledge in an area of Information Studies, and who wish to deepen their knowledge in a specialised area through study and research. It is also suitable for applicants who wish to obtain training in research in order to engage in research and development (R&D) work. MASc and PhD applicants may enrol at any time of the year, on a full-time or part-time basis. Scholarships are available to candidates who study full-time.
What is the Ph.D. by Research?
The PhD programme is a rigorous research programme in which the candidate has to demonstrate substantial knowledge in the field and accomplishment in original research. Graduates typically become lecturers, researchers and consultants. Applicants who wish to pursue research in information studies and who meet the University's requirements for admission (a Master's degree and the ability to pursue research) can apply to enrol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Potential applicants in this category are advised to consult the Head of the Division of Information Studies at an early stage.
