Areas of Concentration
Educating the New Information Professional
The broad range of courses offered provide opportunities for students to focus on an area of information work. Currently, the curriculum has four areas of focus:
Library and Information Science The courses in this area equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to work
as librarians and information specialists in a wide range of organisations and
environments. The courses develop competencies for identifying, selecting and
searching relevant information sources, organising information resources in a
variety of formats, and effectively delivering information to defined user
communities through value-added services and information packaging.
MSc (Information Studies) graduates with a focus in Library & Information Science work in academic, public and research libraries, corporate information centres, and Web-based information environments. They perform professional tasks of managing and developing information resources and services in positions such as:

Information Management & System
Information Management is concerned with the means which an organisation effectively and efficiently plans, collects, organises, uses, controls, disseminates and disposes of its information resources, thereby maximizing their value for the organisation. Naturally, information technology and information systems are employed extensively to support information management. Information Professionals with a range of hard and soft skills are needed both to manage information and resources, as well as to design and manage information systems that support users' information needs and tasks, and to help the organization to flourish in a knowledge-based environment.

Informatics is the interdisciplinary study of information content,
representation, technology and applications, and the methods and strategies for
managing and using information in organisations, networks, cultures and
societies. Courses in the Archival Informatics area examine the concepts and
techniques to manage social, cultural and historical materials as well as
methods that can be applied in information systems design to support integrity,
reliability, authenticity, access, and long-term preservation of records.
