Between BLOGGERS and BUSINESSMEN: Where does JOURNALISM go from here?
|
|
| . |
Wednesday 19 March, 1:00-2:00pm
CS LT, ground floor
Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information
Nanyang Technological University
Pity the professional journalist. Squeezed by business pressures to do less on one hand, and pressured by citizen journalists to do more on the other, media organizations seem to face a quandary. What role should they play and what business model should they embrace, to be relevant - and profitable - in a world where anyone can be a journalist, but few seem willing to pay for journalism? Media companies and journalists face critical choices in the years ahead. Reg Chua lays out some of the possible paths they might take, and what the potential consequences for society might be.
About the speaker
Since 2005, Reg Chua has been an Assistant Managing Editor at The Wall Street Journal - which recently became part of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, immediately prompting questions about the future direction of one of the world's most influential newspapers. Chua moved to the paper's headquarters in New York after eight years in Hong Kong as Editor of the Journal's Asian edition and stints as a reporter in Manila and Hanoi. A Singaporean, he has also been a journalist with The Straits Times, Reuters' Singapore bureau and what used to be called the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR YEAR 1 STUDENTS
|
|
| . |
To ALL YEAR
1 STUDENTS
With the recent roll-out of a NEW curriculum, we understand
that there has been some confusion with regards to CS816
& COM202. The clarification is as follows:
1. CS816 (Information Literacy)
This GER is offered ONLY to Year 2 - 4 students. Year
1 students should NOT register for this course.
Regretfully, students who have already registered
for CS816 must DROP it and opt for another GER.
2. COM 202 (Information Literacy & Interpretation)
This is a CORE subject which will be allocated to
ALL Year 1 students in Semester 2.
Note that this is the equivalent of CS816, hence,
Year 1 students should NOT register for the above CS816
at all.
The difference in course code and title is inevitable
as it arises due to a mapping of the OLD to the NEW
curriculum.
Should you have any doubts or queries, please approach
your respective lecturers.
Thank you.

The Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information
at NTU as a Premier School with International Eminence
|
|
| . |
The Straits Times (26 June
2007, p. 17) carried an excerpt of SPH Chairman Dr Tony
Tan’s speech at the 16th annual conference of the
Asia Media Communication and Information Centre (AMIC)
and the 1st World Journalism Congress. In it, Dr Tan mentioned
that SPH was honoured that one of its journalists, Dr
Wee Kim Wee, rose to the highest office of the land and
had NTU’s communication school named after him.
Dr Tan added that in its short 15-year history, the Wee
Kim Wee School has established a credible record, attracting
good students and producing media professionals who have
made their mark in Singapore and abroad. He believed that
the school has every prospect of securing its place as
