MDA Media Study Awards Cover Wide Range
of Media Disciplines This Year
The Media Development Authority has awarded scholarships and
training awards to 22 young people who are expected to help
put Singapore on the international media map.
These awards will help the 22 recipients to gain academic and
professional training in media disciplines from film and television
production, audio production, animation, games development to
publishing and acting.
Valued at close to $1million, the awards are for full-time courses
at advanced diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels at
reputable tertiary institutions here and abroad. Last year,
25 Singaporeans received the award, while 13 awards were given
out in 2003.
This year, the MDA received an encouraging 106 applications,
representing an increase of almost 50 per cent from 2004. The
availability of media courses at local institutions and the
opening of Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) School of
Art, Design and Media have also contributed to the heightened
interest in media careers amongst Singaporeans. Half of this
year's award recipients have opted to study at local institutions.
Commenting on the opportunities open to the award recipients,
Dr Tan Chin Nam, Chairman of the MDA, said "The increase in
media courses at our local institutions is certainly reflective
of the increasing demand as well as the overall appeal of the
sector. This is encouraging as many Singaporeans are beginning
to see working in the media industry as a viable career option.
"And for those who are studying overseas, they should use the
opportunity to gain international exposure after they graduate
and bring the skills and media contacts they have made back
to Singapore."
"These opportunities will contribute to Singapore's efforts to
build a critical mass of creative manpower as well as enable
these talents to stay at the forefront of creative and technological
development in the media industry," Dr Tan added.
The Media Education Scheme, launched in 2003, is an initiative
under the MDA's Media 21 blueprint. One of the key thrusts of
Media 21 is to build media manpower capabilities in the television,
film, publishing and digital media sectors.
Selection Criteria
Recipients of the Media Education Scheme Awards are selected
based on their academic and creative potential, achievements,
track record and relevant experience, the benefit and value
which the course of studies would bring to the recipient and
to the development of the media industry in Singapore.
Recipients who choose media-related courses at local institutions
will receive up to S$20,000 in tuition fees. Those pursuing
studies at overseas institutions receive awards which may be
valued at up to S$100,000. Overseas award holders must fulfill
a service commitment of up to two years' work in media-related
companies in Singapore within five years of their graduation.
Prior to their return, the MDA also encourages award winners
to gain international exposure by working in media-related fields
overseas after graduation, to acquire invaluable experience
and international contacts.
