» The Centre for Non-Traditional Security Studies Year in Review 2009
Many high impact events affecting the lives of ordinary people occurred in 2009, highlighting the growing list of Non-Traditional Security (NTS) threats facing the region today. These included an unspooling global economy; ongoing political turmoil in China, Thailand and Myanmar; countless natural disasters, such as droughts, floods, earthquakes and storms, for example; as well as communicable diseases - including a novel strain of the influenza virus - spreading widely. These are complex times and they are changing fast. For this Year in Review, we bring you highlights of major NTS events that have affected states and societies in Southeast Asia, the current policy challenges and possible ways ahead.

Prof C. Raja Mohan has been included in Foreign Policy Magazine’s 2009 List of the Top 100 Global Thinkers. The Foreign Policy Magazine’s Top 100 Global Thinkers list features 100 individuals whose ideas had shaped the world in 2009.

Prof. Raja Mohan, a leading Indian foreign policy and international relations expert, was Professor at RSIS and the coordinator of RSIS’ South Asia Programme. He is currently the Henry A. Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

» Official Launch of the NTU-Warwick Double Masters Programme

RSIS, with the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at UK’s University of Warwick jointly launched the new NTU-Warwick Double Masters Programme on 3 November 2009. Addressing the growing interest in a global educational experience among today’s graduates and leaders, the new NTU-Warwick Double Masters Programme will equip professionals from both private sector and public office to understand and appreciate the dynamics and trajectory of contemporary developments today.

The NTU-Warwick Double Masters Programme will capitalize on both Schools’ strengths to address the importance of multiple and cross-disciplinary approaches to global issues. This new full-time Masters venture will allow students, in their first year, to study at the University of Warwick’s Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) and in the second year, at RSIS in Singapore.

» The Warwick International Security Initiative (WISI) – RSIS Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies Conference on Non-Traditional Security
The RSIS Centre for NTS Studies and the Warwick International Security Initiative (WISI) at the University of Warwick co-organised a conference to discuss non-traditional security issues on 2 November 2009. The conference provided participants with a platform to discuss and share European and Asian experiences on NTS issues, and allowed for those involved to identify best practices to tackle challenges in this field.

» Climate Insecurities, Human Security and Social Resilience
Organised by the RSIS Centre for NTS Studies, the conference gathered diverse experts from research institutions and NGOs with the purpose of contributing and advancing knowledge on adaptation and building social resilience for the communities and countries most affected by climate change. The 2-day conference aimed to come to a better understanding of the specific implications of climate change for Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia so that specific 'climate security' measures can be formulated. The conference is part of the MacArthur Asia Security Initiative project on climate change and environmental security, led by the RSIS Centre for NTS Studies.
