Admissions
Admission Requirements for Research Programmes
(a)
Minimum Entry Qualifications for Admission
Master’s Programme
A bachelor’s degree with honours at least at second class
upper level and the ability to pursue research in the
candidate’s proposed field of advanced study.
Doctor of Philosophy Programme
A bachelor’s degree, master’s degree (research-based) and
the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field
of advanced study.

Required Test Scores
For International Students
A good TOEFL* score taken within two years from the date of
application (for applicants whose mother tongue is not
English).
A very good GRE* test score (if applying for Engineering,
Communication and Information Studies, Economics,
Psychology, Sociology or Science). Applicants from India may
use the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score
of at least 90% in place of GRE.
A good GMAT or GRE score (if applying for
Business/Accountancy).
*Note: Please submit a photocopy of the test score with your
application. Official ETS test scores are not required in the
first instance.
For Local Students
A GMAT or GRE score is required if you are applying for the
PhD programmes of the Business, Accountancy, Economics,
Psychology and Sociology disciplines. Applicants (except
NTU/ NUS graduates) applying for the School of
Communication and Information must submit valid GRE
scores.
Students may be admitted as:
(1) Research students in the first instance with the student
expected to be confirmed as a PhD candidate [abbreviation:
Research Student (Ph.D.)]. This category is also open to
applicants without a master’s degree; or
(2) Research students in the first instance with the student
expected to be confirmed as a master’s candidate; students of
sufficient promise may pursue a PhD subject to the scope of
the project. [abbreviation: Research Student (Master’s with
PhD option)]
The University is taking in more PhD candidates and fewer
Master’s students. Candidates who have obtained only a
bachelor’s degree can be offered admission as (1) or (2)
above.
Admission Requirements for Coursework
Programmes
Applicants must possess at least a good bachelor’s degree or
its equivalent.
TOEFL is a requirement for those who graduated from a
university where English was not the medium of instruction.
An equivalent IELTS score is acceptable in lieu of TOEFL.
Application Procedures
Programmes by Research
There are two intakes a year, in January and August.
Applications for a higher degree by research are to be
submitted at least six months before the desired intake date.
The University reserves the right to consider applications for
other semesters.
Applications for admission (excluding applications to the
National Institute of Education) must be submitted online at
Programmes by Coursework and Dissertation
Applications for admission are normally invited through the
press in January for admission in July/August. (NIE’s
invitation for applications for its early January intake is
advertised in July).
