Asia's Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program
Overview
NTC's Master of Science in Technopreneurship and Innovation Program (MSc TIP) is the Asia's Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program offered by Nanyang Technological University (NTU)* since 2002, taking candidates through a revolutionary educational program supported by the Unique teaching pedagogy which expertly combines institutionalized learning with Global Immersion Training in US, China, Malaysia and Singapore, Experiential Learning and Practical Learning Experience.
Modelled against the entire venture creation cycle participants can expect to be equipped and learn the essential entrepreneurship skills, mindsets and rigorous business knowledge critical to starting and growing sustainable ventures.
In short, MSc TIP aims to develop promising entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial leaders that possess both the skills and stamina to start and grow global businesses through global learning experiences beyond the classroom.

Structure
The Master of Science in Technopreneurship and Innovation (MSc TIP) is conducted on a rigorous full time basis over a period of 12 months. It constitutes a total of 42 Academic Units (AUs) and covers 14 modules. Of which, 11 modules will be conducted at NTU (Singapore) inclusive of Entrepreneurship case study project (case study writing and teaching notes), 2 modules at the University of Washington, Seattle, in the United States and the last module at Shanghai, China.
As part of the program design, candidates are required to participate extensively in the entrepreneurship ecosystem which includes the corporate study visits and networking sessions in Singapore, Malaysia, US (Silicon Valley, Kansas City and Seattle) and China (Beijing and Shanghai), University Entrepreneurship Speaker Series and other entrepreneurship initiatives such as SPRING Singapore Bluesky Festivals, NTU Entrepreneurship and Innovation Festival, NTU Business Plan Competition and etc.
Candidates are required to pass all modules in order to qualify for the award of master degree (MSc TIP). Please refer to curriculum description for more details.

Singapore Segment
TP6001 - Entrepreneurship & Business Planning
Focuses on the tools by which entrepreneurial ideas are generated and translated into successful enterprises, while addressing the practical aspects of business plan development and venture start-up planning.
TP6002 - New Venture & Entrepreneur Marketing
Combines sophisticated marketing approaches with practical guidance on how to apply them in entrepreneurial situations. Learn key entrepreneurial marketing concepts and methods.
TP6003 - Venture Capital Financing
Explores high-risk finance from the entrepreneurial and venture capital perspectives - from various stages and sources of financing to cash flow management and measurement of financial performance; followed by the financing strategy of different stages of the ventures life cycle.
TP6004 - Strategic Human Resource Management for New & Ongoing Ventures
Outlines the challenges and opportunities of managing growing companies in entrepreneurial settings and emphasizes practical management methods and techniques.
TP6005 - Intellectual Property, Technology Evaluation & Commercialization
Investigates models and tools for effective management of an organization's Intellectual Property (IP), including the study of patents, trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks, related contracts; emphasizing on the identification of appropriate options and methods by which firms can protect and exploit their investments in developing IP.
TP6006 - Strategic Management for New Ventures & Technology Firms
Explores the strategic tools and priorities by which entrepreneurs create and sustain the competitive advantage in today's challenging and complex business environment.
TP6007 - Seminars on Special Topics in Technopreneurship
Invited speakers and faculty experts take participants through a variety of specialized topics relating to technopreneurship and innovation.
TP6008 - New Venture Creation: Implementing Business Strategy
A practicum learning experience in which participants work in teams work independently, with guidance from the instructor and entrepreneur mentors, to develop new businesses.
TP6009 - New Venture Creation: Managing Growth
Assume top management roles and manage operations through several decision cycles as each team builds and runs a simulated start-up company for "three years" in a realistic global business setting.
TP6101 - Technology, Innovation & Design
Focuses on how start-up companies manage the process of innovation for sustainable competitive advantage. Topics to be discussed cover creativity, knowledge and skills, working environment and infrastructure required for innovation, the evaluation of innovation, and the management of innovations leading to technology commercialization.
In addition, the course provides the students with an overview of human factors and its design process, introduces human factors research and design methodology, needs identification and product specifications, the generation and evaluation of ideas and concepts in the product development processes and strategies.
TP6103 - Corporate Finance and Merger & Acquisition
Discuss the principles of financial management in the analyzing of corporate financial problems in the on-going ventures. Topics include equity and debt financing, financial decisions and announcements, managing corporate growth, free cash flow, payout policy, financial structure policy, the market for corporate control, corporate risk management, international aspects of corporate finance and real options.
The course also discloses the reasons and motivations for the new venture to use merger and acquisition strategy to realize the growth and value for the company. It will give participants an understanding of the issues associated with M&A issues including strategy, cost, valuation, structure, finance, legal, accounting, and integration.
TP6104 - Entrepreneurship Case Study Writing Project (Dissertation)
Participants are required to undertake an entrepreneurship teaching case writing project; Case and Teaching Notes individually. They are also required to prescribe teaching objective for the case and propose answers to strategic questions and methodology.
US Segment
TP6010 - Developing New Business Models for Emerging Technologies
The US undoubtedly is one of the economic powerhouses in the world. Get up close and personal with some of the biggest success stories in the US with:
- 1 week of corporate study visits to startups and corporations in Silicon Valley, San Francisco (US) including seminar session at Stanford University
- 1 week of corporate study visits to startups and corporations in Kansas City including seminar sessions at Kauffman Foundation
- 3 weeks at the University of Washington, Seattle (US)
One of the capstone modules for the US segment will require participants to put to use the knowledge learnt through the program in a business plan competition for potential cash rewards. The business plan competition is judged by many invited US angel investors and venture capitalists from companies such as Encompass Ventures, Vulcan Ventures, Mandora Group, Voyager Capital and Arch Venture Partners. Many past winners have used the cash rewards as part of their seed funding for their startup ventures.
All "venture teams" will be guided by experienced mentors and inventors to evaluate Intellectual Property's (IP) positions, conduct "deep dive" feasibility assessments and develop business plan and concepts for emerging technologies created by Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, A*STAR, Singapore and the University of Washington (UW), Seattle, US.
China Segment
TP6102 - Strategy Innovation & Sustainable Entrepreneurial Leadership
Focusing on the essence and nature of leadership, leadership models, motives and traits, this module deals with leadership knowledge, skills and ability, defining vision and implementation of vision including team building, risk taking and leading change. It also focuses on the concept of strategy innovation in contrast with product or technology innovation.
The concept of business design innovation is introduced in depth to help student acquire the analytical skills and knowledge of conducting a business redesign based on changing customer priorities.
Non-academic Enrichment Modules / Initiatives
1. High Impact Leadership & Team Bonding
A 3-day high impact leadership and team bonding program conducted at Outward Bound Singapore (OBS) to foster bonds amongst TIP candidates and reinforce the importance of risk-taking amongst budding entrepreneurs
2. University Entrepreneurship Speaker Series (UESS)
The University Entrepreneurship Speaker Series brings eminent entrepreneurs and technopreneurs, venture capitalists, investment angels, government officials, intellectual property attorneys and business leaders together to share their experiences and inspire the participants with ideas and opportunities of the future.
3. Technopreneurship and Innovation Program Association (TIPA)
TIPA is an alumni club run and managed by TIP graduates. It provides the first frontier of networking for its members and is a vital component of the MSc TIP program. Many past graduates have formed long-term business partnerships and/or collaborated with one another across various batches, both from English and Chinese tracks to develop and expand their enterprises.
4. Study Visits to Startups and Corporations
As part of the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem and Global Immersion Program for the MSc TIP, candidates are required to visit startups and fast growing companies from US, China, Malaysia and Singapore engage deeply for a strong understanding of how companies are run at various countries. Some of the companies that MSc TIP candidates have visited included Boeing, Costco, Encompass Ventures, IDEO, Google, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Microsoft, Starbucks, ZymoGenetics, Lenovo and more.
5. NTU Alumni Network
NTU has strong alumni connections across the globe particularly in Singapore, Malaysia and China which form a very powerful business networks for her graduates.
6. NTU Entrepreneurship and Innovation (E&I) Festival
In line with Singapore's vision to be a global creative and entrepreneurial nation, NTU, spearheaded by Nanyang Technopreneurship Center (NTC), organize Entrepreneurship and Innovation (E&I) Festival with the following objectives:
- To promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and inspire the NTU community to act on their entrepreneurial and innovative talents, ideas and energy towards establishing tomorrow's leading companies
- To showcase NTU's Entrepreneurship Ecosystem and provide an experiential learning platform for evaluating and creating new business ventures
- To strengthen the bond amongst NTU population and the industry players within a strong atmosphere of entrepreneurialism
- E&I Festival consists of many mega events including E&I Fair, E&I Dialogue Session, E&I High Tea Networking Session, E&I Forum, University Entrepreneurship Speaker Series and NTU BPC.
During this E&I festival, population from NTU including students, staffs, researchers and alumni and members of industry partners celebrates the spirit of entrepreneurship through business and social activities such as trade fair and business fair in campus, networking session and sharing sessions by eminent speakers and industry players which includes successful entrepreneurs, innovators, government officials, Intellectual Property (IP) lawyers, venture capitalist and others.
7. Ideas Inc. Business Challenge
NTC launched its inaugural Ideas.Inc. Business Challenge in 2009. A unique competition that brings together a powerful combination of funding support and expert mentorship for aspiring young entrepreneurs, the competition provides participating teams early-stage capital and mentoring advice and speeds up the commercialization of innovative new products and services from idea to market. Its ultimate goal is to foster a pool of talented market-savvy young business people with innovative new businesses that have strong competitive advantage, scalable IP and market potential beyond Singapore.
Ideas.Inc. is part of the strategy undertaken by SPRING Singapore to promote and nurture youth entrepreneurship in Singapore. It complements the Young Entrepreneurs Scheme for Schools (YES! Schools) and YES! Start-ups to enhance the commercialization of innovative ideas into youth enterprises.

Entry Requirements
For admission as a candidate into the MSc TIP program, the applicant must possess:
- A good bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline of study from a recognized university or tertiary institution
- Proficient in English language
- Applicants - whose medium of study at tertiary level is NOT English - must submit relevant documents of proof of basic English language proficiency
- TOEFL or IELTS score will be useful
- A strong interest in entrepreneurship and innovation
- Intrigued by the challenges in starting up, growing and/or revitalizing businesses
- Self-driven and committed learner, and a strong team player
Only shortlisted applicants will be interviewed. For shortlisted overseas applicants, interview will be conducted via video conferencing.
Admissions are also open to all university students graduating in May of each year.

- What is the MSc TIP Program?
The Master of Science in Technopreneurship and Innovation Program or MSc TIP is the 1st of its kind in Asia's Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation educational program. A fast-track approach to entrepreneurship, it is a program of "real-life" study and experiences with unique features including:
Unique Teaching Pedagogy
Designed with a potential entrepreneur in mind, TIP provides each participant with a wholesome learning experience through a rich array of activities beyond the classroom. With a unique teaching pedagogy, it expertly combines institutionalized learning with Practical Learning Experience, Global Immersion Training and Transformational Experience. By using integrative analytical education tools and dynamic simulations programs, participants will learn how to solve problems and make business decisions effectively.
One of the capstone modules for the US segment will require participants to put to use the knowledge learnt through the program in a business plan competition for potential cash rewards. Many past winners have used the cash rewards as part of their seed funding for their startup ventures.
Exhilarating curriculum
MSc TIP is an intensive 1-year full time master program offered by NTU. It is modelled against the entire venture creation process and effectively delivered through our unique Teaching pedagogy.
MSc TIP Candidates start off the program through a specially designed high-impact team bonding program at the Outward Bound Singapore (OBS). After which MSc TIP Candidates are put through a rigorous knowledge competency building and experiential learning at NTU, followed by a 1-week of startup and corporate study visits in the Silicon Valley (San Francisco, CA) and in Kansas City, MO respectively and a 3-week global immersion program at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA). Expanding their horizon and global views, MSc TIP Candidates are further immersed into a 2-week global immersion program in China that brings them to the Zhongguancun Technology Hub in Beijing and the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai for corporate study visits to startup and fast growing companies.
Study and live in US
A week of startup and corporate study visits in Silicon Valley (San Francisco, CA) and in Kansas City, MO respectively and a 3-week entrepreneurial program of study and experiences at the University of Washington located in the beautiful city of Seattle, WA.
Study and live in China
Extending the learning across two different continents, MSc TIP Candidates are brought to Zhongguancun Technology Hub in Beijing and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai for Corporate study visits as part of the Global Immersion Program.
Real-life applications and entrepreneurial experiences
Working with inventors, MSc TIP Candidates form "venture teams" to evaluate Intellectual Properties (IPs) positions and develop business plans and concepts for "patented" emerging technologies such as biotechnologies, photonics, nanotechnologies, information technology, medical devices and etc, from Nanyang Technological University (NTU),Singapore, A*STAR, Singapore and University of Washington (UW),US.

Technologies from NTU, A*STAR & UW
Participants will be able craft viable business plans using a list of the patented and/ or patent pending technologies from NTU, A*STAR and University of Washington (UW).
Cash Rewards
Each "venture team", mentored by seasoned Seattle-based entrepreneur and/or inventors, will develop business plans using the technologies from UW to compete business plan competition that will be judged by angel investors and venture capitalists from companies such as Encompass Ventures, Vulcan Ventures, Madrona Group, Voyager Capital and Arch Venture Partners. The winning teams will be awarded cash prizes. Many past winners use their winnings as part of their seed funding to startup ventures.
- Who should apply?
MSc TIP candidates come to the program knowing that their careers will be entrepreneurial. They are risk-takers who can think on their feet and who are committed to searching for more innovative ways to use the resources at hand to create new business (either as a start-up or as a new venture within an established firm) or as Entrepreneurial leaders in the corporation who is capable of showing and revitalizing the business in the mounting competitive market space.
- What is the admission requirement?
For admissions as a candidate into the MSc TIP program, the applicant must possess:
- A good bachelor's degree in no particular discipline of his university or such graduate of another university as the Academic Board may approve.
- A strong passion in Entrepreneurship.
- Proficient in English Language.
Only shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in person, or in some cases, a telephone/SKYPE interview may be arranged.
Admissions are also open to all university students graduating in May of each year

- What is the duration of the program?
MSc TIP is a 1 year full time master program offered by Nanyang Technological University.
MSc TIP classes will be conducted at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). As part of the Global Immersion Program, MSc TIP candidates will be spending 1 week in San Francisco, where they will be visiting companies at the Silicon Valley and attend seminars at The Stanford University, 1 week in Kansas City where they will be visiting startups and corporations in Kansas City and attend seminars at Kauffman Foundation and 3 weeks at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle.
Extending the learning across two different continents, MSc TIP candidates are brought to Zhongguancun Technology Hub in Beijing and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai for Corporate study visits and entrepreneurship classes for a period of 2 weeks as part of their Global Immersion Program.
The candidature period for MSc TIP is 3 years. MSc TIP commences annually either in end-May or early-June.
- What will I be conferred as at the end of the program?
Successful graduates will be conferred The MASTER OF SCIENCE IN TECHNOPRENEURSHIP & INNOVATION PROGRAM degree from NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY.
- When is the application deadline?
Admission is CONTINUOUS. Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to send in their applications early.
There are 2 phases of application for admission.
The application deadline for Phase 1 of MSc TIP AY2009 is on 31 December 2009 and Phase 2 of MSc TIP AY2009 is on 31 March 2010.

- How are applicants evaluated and selected for the MSc TIP program?
Only shortlisted applicants will be invited to the Nanyang Technopreneurship Center for an interview. NTU-NTC would like to get to know you - as a potential candidate, as a performer, as a writer, as an entrepreneur, as an individual, etc.
In a broad overview, the selection process consists of indepth interview by a panel of interviewers; review and recommendation by the management of NTC; and review and approval by the Selection Committee.
NTU-NTC is proactively and constantly looking out for individuals who have an inclination and dedication to being entrepreneurial, possess deep passion for entrepreneurship, and keen to give back to society.
