1. Are we allowed to change the coach due to unforeseen circumstances?

Yes, NTU has no requisite that the coach must be the same as he/she who was registered. The reason for a coach is to ensure that the students are under proper supervision by a representative of their institution, while they are on duty that takes them away from their normal place of schooling. NTU requests that the coach (original or substitute) bring some form of identification (e.g. staff card) that confirms they are a bona fide member of the academic staff of the institution. In the case that the coach is not able to produce such identification, NTU reserves the right to contact the institution to confirm the appropriateness of the person claiming to be the new coach. For any change of coach, NTU must be notified in writing (email will suffice) at least 14 working days in advance of the competition date. In the event that notification is shorter than 14 days, the substitute coach should present a letter from the original coach explaining the reason of change on the day of competition.

2. What are the pre-requisite skill sets students participating in this competition should have?

Basic level Java programming. The competition involves mainly declarations, condition loops, method calls, and operation statements. No GUI, no databasing, no interfacing, no complicated algorithms. Basic compiler checks and function tests will be expected, i.e. that the code compiles and that it can defeat the sample enemies. It will be a bonus if you are a keen war gamer as you would probably appreciate the ideas of player regeneration, diminishing health, engagement tactics, search tactics, etc. As there is only one computer, it is okay if not all the participants are programmers. However if you would like to get trained in Java before the competition, NTU will be organising a one-day training workshop for its participants in September. You will need to pre-register for VXG from 1 – 31 July and indicate your interest in the Java training.
