STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT BUFFALO, USA

About the Host University

The University at Buffalo (UB) was founded in 1846 and was now one of the leading public universities in the northeastern United States. UB is the largest and most comprehensive university centre in the 64-campus State University of New York system.

The university has two campuses, each with a personality of its own. Dating from the nineteenth century, the more traditional South Campus is at the northeast edge of the city of Buffalo and houses UB’s health sciences programs. The South Campus, convenient to shopping and inexpensive off-campus housing is linked by the city’s rapid transit line to downtown and the Lake Erie waterfront. The newer North Campus, where the core academic programs are located is five kilometres away in suburban Amherst. Comprising of more than sixty-five buildings on 486 hectares, the North campus features state-of-the-art classroom, laboratory, and library facilities.

UB offers high-level athletic programs, extensive recreation and entertainment facilities, a busy calendar of general-interest lectures, concerts, and films; and a rich variety of cultural activities where the Western New York community take part.

Buffalo is only an hour’s flight from New York City, Washington D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago. The busy international airport at Buffalo is served by eight major airlines, with frequent service to destinations throughout North America. Situated just across the Niagara River from Canada, Buffalo is a major U.S. port of entry for tourist and commercial traffic between the two countries. Buffalo is known as the "City of Good Neighbours" and is a safe city for international students who can live there at a very affordable price. The nearby suburb of Amherst, where the North Campus is located, is rated as one of the safest and best suburban places to live in the United States. Other major attractions that are within easy reach of the university include Niagara Falls, which is only about twenty minutes by car from UB, and Toronto, one of the continents largest cities and a major cultural centre, which is just a ninety minute drive to the north.

Western New York enjoys a temperate four-season climate. Buffalo is known for its balmy dry summers. Pleasant temperatures and colourful foliage mark the fall here and winter snowfalls beautifully transform the landscape.
