A salient feature of the PhD programme is the inclusion of coursework to aid candidates in writing their dissertations. In the early part of the programme, candidates take courses to equip themselves with research skills and substantive knowledge in their area of specialisation. The coursework is divided into a choice of four methodology courses and four functional courses, two of which must be from the students area of specialisation.* The coursework component takes approximately one year to complete, after which a comprehensive examination is set for those in good standing. The dissertation comprises a piece of original research conducted by the candidates under the supervision of faculty members. It is the single most important intellectual output produced during the students candidature and should make a significant contribution to literature in the field of specialisation.
* Depending on the background of the Ph.D. candidate, and subject to the Deans approval, exemptions for up to four courses may be granted.
