Abstract

In the past several years, we have been actively working on the studies of physical properties and device applications of semiconductor nanocrystals. On device applications, we have successfully developed a prototype memory device which exhibits excellent transistor characteristics and has the functionalities of a typical flash memory by using Si and Ge nanocrystals. In the next phase of our research on device applications for a time frame of longer than 5 years, we would like to work on the following exciting but very challenge project: development of few-electron and single-electron devices (transistor and memory) based on nanocrystals. As the operation of the devices involves only few electrons or even a single electron, extremely low power consumption, very fast operation and very high device density are expected.
