A 12-month post-doc position at INRIA

Title: Definition of symbolic and graphical invariants in old documents
Location: INRIA, Lorraine, in the LORIA lab (Nancy, France)
Project supervisor: Prof. Karl Tombre.
Description of subject: The scientific project of the QGAR team at INRIA Lorraine is focused on the usefulness of document image analysis in general, and of graphics recognition more specifically, to provide useful features for indexing and retrieval, when browsing large document databases. In this context, we work in a joint project with other French teams (ACI MADONNE) on computing efficient features for indexing old documents of historical values.
Such documents do not only contain text, but also a number of graphics components and symbols to enhance the presentation. To extract these elements, we need to use symbol recognition methods which are not dependent on a first segmentation step, as this is not always possible in the present case. We believe in the usefulness of defining invariants
which can be directly computed on the document image.
The post-doc proposed here will work on the definition of symbolic and graphical invariants which can be computed on scanned documents of historical value, and which allow us to provide additional features for easily indexing and browsing such documents databases.
Desired Profile for the Candidate: PhD in pattern recognition, document analysis or image processing
Nominal Duration of Fellowship : 12 months
