OVERVIEW
The Materials Laboratory supports the Knowledge
Domain area of materials and surface engineering. The laboratories are situated
in two locations that are designated as Materials Laboratory A and Materials
Laboratory B respectively. Most of the surface characterization and mechanical
testing equipment are housed in Materials Laboratory A. The heat treatment
facilities and the materials processing equipment are located in Materials
Laboratory B.
The research activities supported encompasses those that involve surface characterization, mechanical testing, thermal analysis, rheology, and materials synthesis and processing. Examples of the materials studied include carbon nano tubes, composites, super-plastic metallic alloys, thin films, thermal sprayed materials, metal/polymer injection moldings, fuel-cell materials, nano-materials, and shape memory alloys.
The laboratory currently supports the following experiments
and projects:
Experiments: Microstructure of materials; Mechanical properties
of materials; Viscoelastic properties of materials and Non-destructive testing.
Projects: Study of welded joint of an ultra-high strength
steel; Effect of stress and temperature on creep of
microelectronics solders and engineering plastics; Hardenability of steels; Corrosion
of materials and Mechanical properties of cast aluminum and zinc alloys.
