PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Introduction

This is one of the experiments conducted for the DEVELOPMENT OF ROBOTIC SYSTEM TO ENHANCE THERAPEUTIC GASTROINTESTINAL (GI) ENDOSCOPIC PROCEDURES.

Background of NOTES

Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) has been limited by the degree of freedom, triangulation, devices that are available today.

Objective

Objective of this experiment is to verify the feasibility of surgical procedure using our newly developed endoscopic computer master-slave robotic system. The surgical procedure conducted was hepatectomy or liver resection.

Methodology

The experiments were conducted on Erlangen porcine stomach models and stomach of live pigs.

The experiment was conducted on live pig, and the procedure of the experiment was as follows:

  1. Overtube insertion
  2. Passage of scope with robotic manipulator
  3. Gastrotomy (cutting the stomach wall in order to provide an opening for the robot to enter peritoneal cavity)
  4. Access to peritoneal cavity
  5. Liver wedge resection
  6. Haemostatis
  7. Retrieval of Specimen
