Assistant Professor Qu Xingda, Director, CHFE

Dr. Qu received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in automation control from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing, China, in 2001 and 2004, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in industrial and systems engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, in 2008. He is currently an Assistant Professor with the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Qu’s research interests lie in human motion analysis, postural control and gait, effects of an aging workforce, development and application of ergonomic assessment tools, consumer product design, etc.

Assoc Prof Theng Yin Leng, Deputy Director,CHFE

Dr. Theng joined NTU in 2001. Between 1998-2001, she worked at the Middlesex University (London) as a Senior Lecturer where she taught Human-Computer Interaction and Educational Multimedia. Her research interests in human-computer interaction and digital libraries led to the award of two research grants from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council in the United Kingdom.

Prof Martin Helander, School of MAE

Professor Helander is a leading international figure in HCI, Human Factors and Ergonomics. He has published and edited many books, including the highly regarded and internationally renowned tome “The Handbook of Human Computer Interaction”.  In addition, he has published prolifically in all the leading journals worldwide. Professor Helander has acted as Technical Consultant on both sides of the Atlantic, contributing to several large MNCs including: AT&T, Eastman Kodak, Erricsson, IBM Corporation and Xerox Corporation. His major research interests include HCI, Manufacturing and Models of Engineering Design. Professor Martin Helander is a member of the Editorial board of numerous international journal s and conferences and is the past President of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA).  He is the Director of the Masters of Science in HFE Programme.

Assoc Prof Benjamin H. Detenber, School of SCI

Prior to joining the School, Dr. Detenber taught at the University of Delaware and Stanford University. He has many years of experience in video production and non-commercial radio, but now teaches primarily communication theory and research classes. He has broad research interests, and has conducted studies on the psychological and emotional impact of media presentations, processes and outcomes associated with social cognition, and theoretical aspects of public opinion.

In addition to university work, Dr. Detenber has consulted with high tech companies, taught communication skills to schoolteachers, and given numerous presentations to educators and media professionals.

Assoc Prof Schubert Foo, School of SCI

Dr. Foo is a registered Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council of UK, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and Fellow of the British Computer Society. He worked in the Research and Development department in Babcocks Energy Limited in UK for six years, before returning to Singapore in 1990 to take up an academic appointment at NTU. He has since taught in various divisions of the university: Computing Technology, Software Systems and Information Studies.

His teaching covers a range of courses in information storage and retrieval, computer programming, human computer interaction, user interface design, systems analysis and design, mathematics, accounting, industrial management, and knowledge-based organizations.

He has consulted widely, involved in many different professional activities, and published more than 115 international journal papers, book chapters and conference papers in his research areas. He has supervised and graduated a number of Ph.D. and Master students by research. He is a member of the National Archives of Singapore Board.

Associate Professor Khoo Soo Guan, Christopher, School of SCI

Dr. Khoo joined NTU in 1996. Prior to this, he worked for eight years at the NUS Library, in various roles.

At NTU, Dr. Khoo teaches courses on information mining and analysis, database management systems, Web-based information systems, information sources and searching, and research methods.

His main research interests are related to natural language processing, information extraction and knowledge discovery, text and data mining, intelligent interfaces, and information retrieval. He was the editor of the Singapore Journal of Library & Information Management, from 1997 to 2002.

ramiah Assistant Professor Chennupati K. Ramiah, School of SCI

Dr. Ramaiah joined NTU in 1999. Prior to this, he has worked as a scientist with the Defence Research & Development Organization (India), from 1984 to 1999. Dr. Ramaiah has published more than 40 journal papers, conference papers, book chapters and reports. He is a member of many international professional bodies/societies, including Institute of Information Scientists, LA, ASIS&T & ACM.

Assistant Professor Goh Hoe Lian, Dion, School of SCI

Dr. Goh joined NTU in 2000. Before this, he worked as a web site developer for a multimedia company in Singapore, and as a software engineer for a major oil services company in Houston, Texas, USA.

He also partook in the building of a digital library for the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum located at College Station, Texas, USA.

His current research interests are in digital library applications, the use of information technology in education, and the application of Internet technologies to support these fields. Other interests include hypermedia and multimedia systems as well as user interfaces.

Assistant Professor Na Jin Cheon, School of SCI

Dr. Na joined SCI in June 2002. Prior to this, he has worked for the Agency for Defense Development, Korea, as a senior researcher. Whilst there, he was involved in the development of the Korean C3I (Command, Control, Communication, and Intelligence) system.

Maria

Assistant Professor Maria Pieter Aquilia, School of SCI

Dr. Aquilia has lectured since 1988 at University of Technology Sydney, Curtin University of Technology, Macquarie University, and Edith Cowan University in Australia.

She is a graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School; she has an extensive background as a scriptwriter, script editor and director in film and television, including Water Rats, Heartbreak High, Totally Wild and E Street.

Her unpublished novel, Daughters of the Mob, was a finalist for the 1997 Vogel Award for literature. She has also won range of awards, including a AWGIE nomination, for her film, television and video work.
