Manufacturing transforms ideas and concepts into products and services for the betterment of society. By virtue of this, the field of manufacturing engineering is multi-disciplinary; covering materials science and engineering to fabrication technologies to manufacturing systems and operations.
Faculty in the Division teach and research into the fundamentals and applications of metals, polymers, ceramics, composites and semiconductor materials, fabrication and measurement techniques as well as the design of products, their manufacture and production planning and control. Equipped with knowledge of the fundamental sciences and processing techniques, ME Division faculty are sought after as expert resource persons and advisors in industry and government.
As manufacturing accounts for about 25% of Singapore’s GNP, the Division will endeavor to continue to service industry and train the requisite human resources needed. In tandem with the latter, the Division is continually mindful of the need to equip our graduates with knowledge in current and emerging manufacturing engineering. Research into the Next Generation Manufacturing (NGM) includes work on advanced materials and materials processing, ultra-precision engineering, micro- and nano-fabrication, and advanced manufacturing systems.
