Frequently asked Questions

Section 1 - On Application

1.1. How can I apply?

 Visit this website :

 http://www.ntu.edu.sg/GradStudies/Coursework+Programmes/

when the course is open for application (see Question 1.2), follow through the instructions, and you will get to the on-line application form. Fill it in and return it on-line. Make sure that you also follow the instructions on what documents you need to send by post.

1.2. When can I apply?

The courses are open for application usually early January for the July intake. There is usually a window of about six weeks in which you can send in your application.

1.3. What qualification must I have?

Human Factors is cross disciplinary. You must have a first degree in a discipline relevant to your program – it could be in engineering or the sciences. Most of our students have a background in either Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or Industrial Design  If you have a degree from another discipline you can still apply.

If in doubt, then just apply, and let us make the decision at our end. If you do apply, you will have a chance to get in. If you don't, you will have no chance at all.

1.4 Do I need to have relevant working experience?

While we prefer applicants with working experience, this is not an absolute requirement.

1.5 Do I need TOEFL?

There are two answers to this question. If you come from a university whose teaching medium is English, then you don't need to submit a TOEFL score. Otherwise, you do.

However, there are many universities in the world, and we might not have heard of yours, or worse still, previous students from your university might not have done well in NTU, then we would want to look at your TOEFL even if the teaching medium is English.

1.6 What is the minimum TOEFL score required?

The minimum TOEFL score required is 570.

1.7 Do I need GRE or GATE?

No, there is no formal requirement for either. However, if you have them, send them in with your application. Extra pieces of useful information will help.

1.8 Can you please send me the application form?

No. The application form is available online when the course is open for application, usually beginning of January for the July intake. There is usually a window of about six weeks in which you can send in your application.

You will need to complete and return the form online, upon which you will be given an application ID. This ID will enable you to communicate with NTU in the future concerning your application.

1.9 Can you send me write-ups on the application procedure and the course?

We don't normally send out printed materials any more. All the information you need is on our Graduate Studies website, http://www.ntu.edu.sg/GradStudies/Coursework+Programmes/

Please follow the appropriate links in there.

 Section 2 -  Money Matters

2.2 What is the cost of living in Singapore?

A guide to the cost of living is given in this webpage:

http://www.ntu.edu.sg/GradStudies/Coursework+Programmes/For+International++Candidates/

2.3 Is there scholarship available?

In general, a scholarship is available only to students of ASEAN countries, which include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. No scholarship is available to students from other countries. More scholarship information is available in this webpage: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/oas2/postgraduate/coursework/scholarships.pdf

Section 3 - Matters concerning foreign students

3.1 I am a foreign student, can I apply for part time studies?

(A foreign student is one who is not a Singapore citizen and does not hold a permanent residence permit.) There are two answers to this question.

(1) Yes, if you already hold another form of permit, such as a work permit, that allows you to live in Singapore legally over the duration of the course.

(2) If you don't satisfy the requirement in the first answer, then you cannot be a part time student. This is because you will then need a student pass, but the Singapore Immigration Department only issue student passes to full time students in Singapore. So you can only apply to be a full time student.

3.2 How do I apply for the student pass?

Once you application is successful, NTU will apply for the student pass for you. There isn't much you need to do here.

3.3 How do I look for accommodation in Singapore?

NTU will help you to obtain student accommodation on campus if you wish. Please visit this webiste for further information: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/oas2/isu/gradaccom/

Otherwise, you will have to look for housing yourself.
