Use of flash drive or thumb drive

What is USB Flash drive?

A USB flash drive is a compact USB flash memory drive that acts like a portable hard drive, letting you store and transport your computer data.

How do I use a USB Flash drive?

Flash drive or Thumb drive (USB 1.0/1.1) are plug and play devices. It does not require additional installations. Windows XP will auto detect and show the device in Windows Explorer after it is plugged into the USB port.

Where is the USB Flash drive?

pc caseFor the Acer Veriton 7700GX (located at Lee Wee Nam Library level 2: A2001 - A2228, Lee Wee Nam Library level 4: A4101 – A4164 and Library 2 level B3: B3041 – B3102), the USB drive is located on the CPU as shown in the picture on the left circled in red.

 

For the HP d325 (located at Lee Wee Nam Library level 4: A4001-A4100; Library 2 level B3: B3001-B3040; Media Resource Library: M1-M4, M13-M18), USB cables are available and can be found on the tables.

For the Compaq Pentium 4 (located at the Library 2 level B2 (entrance level); Media Resource Library: M5-M12, M19-M30), the USB drive is located on the front of the CPU.

What should I do if my thumb drive is not detected?

If your thumb drive is not recognised by the computer. Please disconnect your H: or Z: drive (home drives) before plugging in your thumb drive and try again. To disconnect your home drives, go to My Computer, select the network drive to be disconnected and then click on Tools/ Disconnect Network Drive.

Safely Remove USB Devices

What devices are affected?
These steps apply to USB keychain drives, cameras, memory card readers, etc.

Why do this? Why not simply yank it out?
If you don't safely eject the drive, you may corrupt the drive and individual files or completely destroy data. Avoid File Corruption in Windows

Find the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.

Attach a USB device. An icon appears in the notification area (aka system tray). Look in the lower right corner of the screen near the time. The icon has a diagonal green arrow pointing down to the left. It is circled in red below to the left. If you pause the mouse pointer over the icon, its name will pop up. See the example below to the right.

Request safe removal.

Single-click the icon. A list of removable drives appears.

This portable computer has two removable drives: the CD-RW/DVD drive E: and the USB keychain drive F:.

If you cannot tell which to remove, look for the drive letter in My Computer. This example shows two removable drives.

The one with the silver platter is the CD-RW/DVD drive. In this case, drive E:

The generic icon represents a USB keychain drive, F:

Now that you know the drive letter, repeat the ejection process outlined above.

Now you may remove it.
