Research Positions in Participatory Sensing for Smart, Sustainable and Safe Cities
The Intelligent Systems Centre (IntelliSys) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is working on various R&D issues in sensor network and cyber-physical systems in order to develop impactful applications for smart, sustainable and safe cities.
We are working on research projects with the goal of building engaged, data participative communities. We will develop participatory sensing technologies for large-scale collection of human activity data from people via their smartphones and other embedded devices. We will develop novel applications in the domain of transportation, smart buildings, etc.
We are inviting
applications for the following research position.
1. Research Scientist / Research Fellow
Responsibilities :
- Design and develop a prototype participatory sensing system based on smartphones, capable of collecting accurate human activity data in an unobtrusive manner.
- Design and develop participatory sensing techniques to improve the accuracy of activity data collection.
- Design and develop the backend system infrastructure and middleware.
- Design and develop a scalable data management cyberinfrastructure.
- Design and develop data analytics techniques for processing the data.
- Lead the field deployment, application development and data collection exercise.
- Help to mentor junior members of the team.
Requirements:
- A PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
- Substantial expertise in one or more of the following areas: sensor networks, cyber-physical systems, sensor data management, e-Science cyberinfrastructure, service-oriented architecture, semantic web, ontology design, grid and cloud computing.
- Substantial hands-on experience in the development of data management systems and system software.
- Excellent programming skills in C/C++. Java, etc.
- Excellent analytical, technical and problem solving skills.

2. Research Engineer / Research Associate
Responsibilities :
- Implement, deploy and test the prototype participatory sensing system.
- Develop apps for participatory data collection on popular platforms like iOS and Android.
- Develop various applications and services for data management and visualization.
- Design and develop data analytics techniques for processing the data.
- Help senior researchers in the team to perform research.
Requirements:
- A Masters in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields. Will consider candidates with good Bachelors (Honors) degree and substantial relevant work experience.
- Good experience in one or more of the following areas: participatory sensing, mobile computing, middleware design, database design, web application development.
- Excellent experience in developing system software.
- Excellent hands-on experience in platform technologies such as Linux, real-time OS, web services, iOS and Android application development, etc.
- Excellent programming skills in C/C++, Java, etc.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
Desirable Attributes :
- Innovative, resourceful, and self-motivated.
- A team player with good people skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
