Bio-sketch: Prof SH Teoh received his B Eng (1st Hons) and PhD from Monash Univeristy, Australia in 1978 and 1982 respectively. He is presently Professor and Director Centre of Biomedical Materials & Applications (BIOMAT) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). He was the Chairman of the NUS Graduate Bioengineering Programme from 1999 to 2005. Prior to this appointement he established the Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering which formed the foundation for the bioengineering activities in the faculty.

He has also received a number of awards such as the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship Award (1990) and jointly with his co-authors in Best Paper Awards such as: American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) (1997), Int Assoc. for Dental Research - South East Asian Div, (1999), Biomedical Eng Soc (Singapore), (2004). His outstanding contribution in providing vision in bioengineering and bringing French and Singapore scientists together was honoured in a ceremony in June 2002, Lyon by CNRS, France. He has been honored to chair in a number of international meetings related to biomedical engineering in many parts of the world. He received the prestigious Gold Award for Asia Innovation Award, Far East Economic Review, and the Institute of Engineers Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award in 2004, for development of the platform technology for scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. He has a passion for teaching and well liked by his students.  In 2003 and 2004 he was awarded NUS Excellent teacher.

His main field of research is in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, applying the principles of materials science and engineering to biomaterials. His main contribution is in the failure of biomaterials, the 3D bioresorbable scaffolds for bone and ultra thin membrane tissue engineering.  He did some pioneering work in fracture-wear resistant biomaterials. He has research collaborations with researchers in Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry and Science and attracted more than SGD$6M research grants, supervised 30 graduate students, filed 6 patents, given 35 keynote/invited lectures and published more than 260 technical papers.

Prof Teoh contributes significantly to professional bodies. He sits in as board of editors for Tissue Engineeering, International Polymer Processing Journal and the J of Damage Mechanics. He had served in numerous committees ranging from ASTM (USA) F04 on Surgical Implant Materials, American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO) and Biomedical Engineering Society (Singpaore). He is the Editor-in-chief of Biomaterials Engineering and Processing, Guest Editor of Tissue Engineering and Materials Sci and Eng: C. He edited a well received book entitle Engineering Materials for Biomedical Applications (published by World Scientific) and co-editored the Comprehensive Structural Integrity Encyclopaedia, Ch 9 Bioengineering published by Elservier, a publication that has won international repute. He is actively involved in promoting bioengineering research and education and organising conferences such as the International Biomedical Engineering Conference, Singapore and chairing international symposium such as in Cardiac Tissue Engineering Biomechanics in World Congress of Biomechanics, 2002 and Advanced Biomaterials in ICMAT 2005.
