Biosketch: Assoc Professor Pierce Chow graduated with MBBS from the National University of Singapore and received his surgical qualifications in 1994 at the conjoint FRCS(Edinburgh)/MMed(Surgery) examination during which he was also awarded the Chapter of Surgeon’s Gold Medal for being the most outstanding candidate.  While still in advanced surgical training in 1995 he was conferred the prestigious Young Surgeon’s Award of the Academy of Medicine for studies carried out on regeneration of the liver after surgical resection. A/Prof Chow went on to receive many other awards including the Seah Cheng Siang Prize of the Gastroenterology Society of Singapore (1997) and the Sir James Frazer Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2002).

After completing advanced surgical training in Singapore, A/Prof Chow received additional specialized training as Senior Clinical Fellow with the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery Unit of the Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Queensland Liver Transplant Unit in Australia under a Government of Singapore Fellowship. A/Prof Chow is currently Chief of HPB Service and Senior Consultant Surgeon at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), visiting Senior Consultant in Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Centre and visiting Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University.

Combining established treatments with cutting-edge therapies, A/Prof Chow is actively engaged in clinical trials and translational research, especially in novel therapies for liver cancer. He co-founded the Asia-Pacific Hepatocellular Trials Group in 1997 and currently chairs 2 multi-national liver cancer trials.  He concurrently directs one of the most established translational research units in Singapore, the Department of Experimental Surgery at SGH and serves on many advisory bodies including the Singhealth Research Council and the MedTech Concept Advisory Panel of the Economic Development Board of Singapore.

A/Prof Chow teaches and examines in surgery at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has more than 80 clinical and translational research publications in book chapters and in high impact journals including Hepatology, Clinical Cancer Research and Annals of Surgery. In 2006 he was awarded the Excellent Publication Award of the Singapore General Hospital.

A/Prof Chow has a very active surgical practice and treats many international patients at his clinic at the Singapore General Hospital and the National Cancer Center, Singapore. In 2003 he was conferred the SARS Courage medal for his role during the outbreak and the Excellent Service Award (Gold) in Healthcare by Spring Singapore in 2004 for commitment and service to patients.
