I am an Assistant Professor with the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and a research scientist at the Advanced Digital Science Center. I received my B.S. degree from Harbin Institute of Technology in Electrical Engineering in 2005 and the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010. During my PhD study, I worked with David Forsyth, Derek Hoiem, and Fei-Fei Li. I also interned at Microsoft Research Redmond (2008), Kodak Research (2009), and Adobe Research (2010).

My research interests include computer vision and machine learning, especially at the intersection of the two. I am currently focusing on feature learning, scene understanding, and video analytics. Beyond teaching computers to intepret the facts in images, I am also interested in developing new algorithms to enable computers to make subjective judgement based on image content. This research is currently sponsed by an A*STAR PSF project called "Visual Opinion Computation".
