PhD Thesis (1996)

Applications of nonlinear filters with the linear-in-the-parameter structure

Supervisors:  Prof Bernard Mulgrew (U Edinburgh),
Prof Peter Grant (U Edinburgh) and
                  Prof Chen Sheng (U Southampton).

Abstract

The thesis examined non-linear algorithms for signal processing applications. Particular attention was paid to non-linear filters with the linear-in-the-parameter structures such as the Volterra and radial basis function (RBF) network. Techniques were developed to reduce the computationally complexity of the orthogonal least squares algorithm which was used for parameter selection within these structures. In the study of these filters for time series prediction, a gradient version of the RBF predictor was developed to operate with a certain classes of non-stationary signal. In addition, the application of the RBF network for channel equalisation was also studied.
